I caught a wicked bug about 10 days ago and still have nose blowing and ear issues when blowing. The Dr. put me on a 10 day of Amoxicilin but now has given me a prescription for 6 days of Prednisolone. I am doing Oceanside this weekend…given that, if you were me would you take this now or just wait it out? Being an anti-inflammatory it almost seems like it could help? Thoughts?
Actually, if a medrol dose pack - will probably HELP your performance ![]()
.
Was kind of thinking that too…no need for Advil now , right?
Correct - have a good race!
Scott-Prednisolone is a very widely used corticosteriod and I can’t imagine people have raced while taking it and have not “asked for permission.” My sense is that you were given a Medrol Dose Pak, or a 6 day course of the drug where the dosage level is decreased daily until completion. One of the things the doc probably told you was that, once you start the medication, you want to finish the whole pack without missing a day. If you decide to just stop, there are certain side effects from a withdrawal-like picture that you’d rather avoid. Good luck in the race, hope you podium in your age group.
No need for advil indeed. Just couple it with caffeine, cocaine, a bit of vicodine, and you’re good to go. DIY Belgian mix.
withdrawal/side effects from less than 6 days of steroids ??? please explain.
and, yes, corticosteroids have been shown to be performance enhancing which is why they are on the banned list
Just google “Addisonian crisis” for an extreme example. Not likey with methylprednisolone for that short a time though.
Brent-rroof is correct. Simply google the drug and it will give you PDR (Physicians Desk Reference)/ package insert answer. I know it’s the long answer but it’s one known for it’s completeness. Although 6 days of this type of steroid seems innocent enough, although rare, ask someone who’s had an exposure to TB some time in their life, quiescent until the “anti-inflammatory” treatment, who’s had it reactivated about side effects.
Also, if you check the 2008 World Antidoping List, you’ll see that glucocorticosteroids (the family this drug is in) are permissible with a physician initiated “Theraputic Use Exemption.” (Page 9) In fact, it was kind of funny a few weeks ago when one age grouper really berarated a forum user as a DOPER since he was getting a corticosteroid cutaneous treatment with ultrasound from his PT and the WADA points out that this is an acceptable use of this steroid! (No exemption needed)
None of us are too old to learn something new every day.
Then again, you could be one of the ones that experiences some of the side affects. I took it once and it resulted in shortness of breath and dizziness for me. Had a hard time riding down a straight hill while on the stuff. Couldn’t go up a hill to save my life. Its bad when someone 30 pounds lighter than you(and who hates descending) drops you cuz you can’t ride in a straight line down a slight grade.
That was my own experience. The exSO had no such reaction when she took it.

not likely? i would say just about impossible.
and, yes, you can get a tue, but it is a banned substance.
