I’m the moron who bought a new Shiv one week before Kona. Did 3 short taper rides on it (in Kona) and that was the extent of it. CW says this is suicide. So what happened? Had an IM PR on the bike (4:57) and felt fantastic. No problem with the fit whatsoever. Simply put, the Shiv is titty. The bad news? Got so caught up in flying around the bike course on my sweet new ride that I severely over-bikes and paid in spades on the run. Had a decent first half, but a dreadful second half, ending up with a pedestrian run split of 3:45. The moral of the story is that while the CW may have been wrong about a brand new bike one week out from an A race, it was right on the money about the perils of over-biking.
A couple of side-notes. We had a tie in my informal prediction contest. Twomarks and davidbtri were the (closest) winners, each having predicted a bike PR for me. They were, however, dead wrong about the “solid” run, but I will look past that. Send me the addresses of your charities and I will send out a check next week.
afbadbrad, you did NOT beat me to T2, but you ran past me like I was standing still on the run. Nice work.
And I never did catch my GG teammate sentania by T2 (or the finish line), despite having burned every match I had on the bike. He had a great race.
I agree there shouldn’t be any issue whatsoever in switching a bike if all the fit coordinates are the same. Last time I bought a new bike, I set up exactly like the old one and never had an issue. If however you switch to a bike that won’t allow you to match your position - then yes, you’re asking for trouble the week before an IM.
I took a photos of Crowie from 2010, and 2011, made them the exact same size, and put one opaque over the other, and his position is so close on both bikes. Couldn’t believe it. I figured he’d be much different on the new ride.

Thanks! It wasn’t in the plan to run that fast, nor did I know I could go that fast. I executed my plan up till the run, and then will for some reason the legs wanted to just go, so off they went. Nice bike split, btw!
