Pre-race jitters

I just ran my best marathon by 20 minutes, without even racing it. (3:35). Last week, I had no energy, was depressed, I binged on bad food all week (I mean lots chips, candy bar, pizza…), I was freaked out and couldn’t even finish my swim and 40 minutes run on friday(I walked most of it)… Has anyone ever experienced this? It was like I completely freaked out, lacked confidence, told evryone I wouldn’t do good, flat out couldn’t handle the pressure and absolutly felt terrible (also gained 4 pounds)… But ended up doing great… I am worried about feeling like this pre-IM USA and would like suggestions to avoid such self destructive behavior in the futur and see if anyone else has had that happened.

Basically Marisol, you kicked ass.

In the future, just start walking in the middle of the race. That will prevent you from beating your best time by 20 minutes… What were you looking for here?

Next time, don’t be to shy just to tell everyone you did great and set a PR.

Better bag the Ironman idea, you’ll be a mess! If you decide to do it, dont tell anyone you didnt try. Great marathon time esp. for not trying.

Actually, I didn’t post this to brag… I was more wondering if anyone else freaks out like this before races and what to do about it… It doesn’t seem normal to me to feel awful the week before and great during the race… It has to be psychological…

I think it may just be your perception. I don’t know what I’m talking about, but what you are doing sounds like it is working very well for you. Don’t worry about it… Just take care of each thing as it comes up, and don’t stress about things down the road.
