Interesting article. Seems hard to believe?

The results are not hard to believe since they were testing novice cyclists.

We all do starvation rides once and a while, seemingly for a purpose. This study might give that some clout but as you said doing this with novice cyclists means the results probably don’t apply to many ST members.
After looking through the abstract, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20452283 I’m inclined to say that although their results is significant, at least statistically speaking, they need to run many more athletes to say much definitively and before anyone changes their habits: 8 females and 6 males…

Its “shock factor” journalism like this that leads to myths in the best case scenario and unhealthy habits or worse in the worst.

I’m not drawing any conclusions from the article because there isn’t enough info to draw conclusions from.

Time magazine did an excellent disservice to exercise with their article “The myth about exercise”. It was, for the most part, spot on in regard to the fact that its easier to not eat 1,000kcals than it is to burn them off. However, it portrayed the information in a way that was detrimental to the positive effects of exercise and played extensively on the “shock value” of their “radical” new idea.
