Pre-Clipping Question Using Look 5.1s

I just bought some triathlon bike shoes (Specialized Tri-vents). I want to learn how to pre-clip and have been just practicing putting my feet into and out of my shoes while the shoes are clipped into the pedals. The problem I have with slipping my feet in, or out, for that matter, is that I unclip.

I’m using basically new 5.1 cleats, the red one Delta?, with the float. The shoe is not staying in on the clip sufficiently for me to take my feet in and out of the shoe. I have my 5.1 pedal setting on the “0” level.

I need a tighter cleat, I think. Would the black fixed Look SPD cleat be less movable? And if so, will they be harder to clip out of. I want a pedal cleat which stays in there good, but not one making it impossible for me to clip out of for traffic or safety reasons.

I think you’re doing something wrong or the pedal/cleat is broken. My 5.1s are some of the tightest pedals I’ve ever had - you can’t accidently clip out of them.

When the cleat is new its tighter than it is after a few months, but either way, this pair of cleats is about 9 rides old, and if I squirm my foot out of the shoe, I will slightly clip out.

I’ve heard people say that about 5.1s. But I don’t think my 5.1’s are as tight as my Time mid pedals. Now, those things, are something else. Shitty, heavy but you ain’t getting out of those suckers until you get back to the car.
