Prayers for a friend, bike crash in Ohio

One of the nicest guys I know went down in a group ride last night. He broke his clavicle, several facial bones, and went unconscience. He is currently in critical condition in tv ICU. Please keep him in your hearts and prayers and wish him a speedy recovery.

Will do. Let us know when your friend gets out of ICU. He’s regained consciousness, right?

My thoughts and prayers are with him, and his family and friends.

I hope he recovers well.

Hope he recovers quickly.

I will keep him in my prayers. Do you have any details on the crash? I try to find out these things just to know more what/when/where’s to be aware of while riding.

am praying for your friend. God Bless.

He was doing a group ride. Sounds like it was a rather large Peloton (I don’t ride with them, so I am not sure how big). A third friend who was there said they probably should have split into two groups.

No one I’ve talked to had too clear of a picture, but it sounds like two bikes got too close, or someone accidental cut someone off. I don’t know if my friend was part of the initial problem or was just cruising behind them.

He went down pretty hard, but I guess he said the worst part was when someone behind him rode over him and I think his pedal struck him hard.

He didn’t lose conscienceness until the ambulance ride over to the hospital. He is awake now, still intubated, but he is a strong man. Kept giving thumbs up and was proud to see his resting heart rate was in the low 50’s.

PSA: Don’t ever, ever, ever not wear a helmet. Don’t let your children ride up and down the drive way without a helmet, EVER. I can’t imagine how bad this could have been if he wasn’t wearing his.

My prayers are also with him. His conditioning should play a huge factor in his recovery. I agree a thousand percent regarding the helmet. I had a crash in June and I am quite sure one of the reasons I am alive today is because of the helmet I was wearing. My best to your friend.

Fear monger much?

Think of the thousands of pro cyclists and millions of kids who died in crashes before helmets became mandatory… er… wait… there weren’t. In fact every population study on the effectiveness of helmets in reducing cycling injuries and death have shown no benefit.

I understand that you are in shock and traumatized by this, and it is a common reaction… but it leads to a lot of wrong conclusions.

Who and where and which ride? The Outdoor Pursuits ride from New Albany?

I’m not sure who it was with. They took him to Grant. I would think from New Albany the squad would take trauma cases to Mount Carmel East Hospital. Not sure though.

You’re saying that bike helmets don’t reduce injuries?

Helmets provide a 63 to 88 percent reduction in the risk of head, brain, and severe brain injury for all ages of bicyclists.

Here’s a link to a number of studies: http://depts.washington.edu/hiprc/practices/topic/bicycles/helmeteffect.html

But maybe we should start another link to discuss this. I don’t want to turn a “get-well” thread into a dispute.

sully, do you mind sharing a name, i know a lot of the people that ride over there (if not dont worry, totally understand).

i hope everything goes well and he recovers soon.

First, what an inappropriate place to take such a stand. Second, what kind of bullshit studies are you citing? Show me the study where all the people who fell, hit their heads, were wearing a helmet so nothing bad happened to them, and they got up off the pavement and reported it to somebody doing a study.

Freaking ridiculous.

There are NO studies I’ve seen that have counted the people who can’t be counted … those who’ve had the crashes, had nothing happen because of their helmets, and just rode off to ride another day. Who has surveyed them and included them in their statistics? I’ve had three such accidents that would have left me a drooler. No survey takers have ever appeared at my door to inquire about any of them … because there were no head injuries to report.
.

I’ll pray for him.

Broken 2 helmets in crashes and both times I would have been severely hurt if not for the helmet. More than likely dead on one occasion, lest that’s what the emergency room Doc said.

Check the other thread about helmets.

Sorry, but I strongly disagree with your post.
Even if you can cite “every population study” I will remain skeptical.
Having survived a bad crash into a concrete barricade which took a chunk out of my helmet exterior and cracked
the inner shell, I will have a hard time believing that the helmet did not save my life or my life as I live it today.

Considering the vast number of people with stories like yours (I have one too!), we should expect that previous to the invention of bicycle helmets, riders died by the droves… but this isn’t the case. If you are curious as to why, then I suggest you move over to the helmet thread.
