Powertap SL+ and Garmin 705

A worthy option? the powertap cpu is pretty basic and the options for changing the display are limted. Does then 705 make for easy flicking through options and display more info in one screen.
ie - have on one screen HR, power, cadence, speed, timer all at the same time?

any help would be great guys!!!

I am by no means a Garmin fan . . . However I did get a 705 to replace my 305. The PT CPU is way too limited and I did not like having two CPU on my bike. The 705 reads the PT hub data exactly the same as the PT CPU.

I believe the 705 is easier and more intuitive to navigate.

I display 8 times on my screen including HR, power, cadence, speed, time.

The Garmin 705 is light years better than the powertap head unit. The Garmin allows you to customize your display with between 1 and 8 data fields that you organize any way you like on the screen. The data that the two produce is identical.
My only minor gripe is that there seems to be a 1 second lag in processing data as compared to the powertap. Unless you’re doing super short intervals, its not a big deal.

On my screen I have:
-Power
-Heartrate
-Cadence
-Speed
-Workout Time
-Lap (Interval) Time
-Lap (Interval) Average Power
-Time of Day

There’s probably 50 different fields you can select from, and you can have a different screen setup for another bike. Its fantastic.

Thats fantasic stuff guys thanks… garmin 705 it is then!!!

cheers

I just got the PT hub and Garmin 705. The 705 is reading power and seems to be working fine, but I am wondering about how to zero torque as is described in the owners manual using the PT computer. I’m not at all sure how to zero torque with the Garmin unit. If anyone can help I’d appreciate it!
Thanks.

Menu → Settings → Ant+Sport → Accessories, and then Click Calibrate Power at the bottom of the page. You should get back a message that the calibration was either successful or unsuccessful (if you don’t get this message then update your firmware). Also, Garmin still gives you an option to auto-calibrate (while coasting), which PT lost in it’s latest update - not sure why PT took this step backwards.

Mark,
Thanks for the help. I upgraded the firmware first thing when I got the 705 so should work fine.
BTW, we actually are fellow Bethel cycler’s… I’m the one you guys had to drop on Geer Mountain rd a couple of years ago on a training ride for Nutmeg 70.3.
Anyway, best of luck with training and Rev3 in June and thanks again for the assistance!

I just clicked on your profile, and there’s no name there (and TriguyCT is somewhat ambiguous) - so who are you??

I loooooove Geer Mountain Road. Rev3 course will seem like a cakewalk next to the Nutmeg 1/2.

The 705 is awesome by the way. It’s equally as good as the PT head unit is bad!!

Hi guys. I am trying to get a Garmin 705 unit setup with a Powertap SL hub but cannot get it to pickup the power reading. I have tried the Settings - Accessories - Check for Signal (or whatever it says) but it still won’t read. I updated the Garmin firmware to the current version. Could the problem lie in the PT hub or its firmware? If so, how can that be updated to make sure it is current with ANT+? The 705 is picking up cadence and speed and satellites so I know it is functioning, just no power readings. I do not have the PT head unit, just the 705. Any thoughts? Could the batteries be low in the hub? It is a new wheel, but maybe the hub is old?
