Powertap says "---"

I’ve been having some problems with my PT SL on my past couple of rides and I’m hoping someone who’s had the same problem can fill me in. I don’t have access to the manual that came with the PT as I’m moving house and in temporary accommodation. The unit works perfectly for between 1 and 3 hours, but then the computer screen will say “—” in the current power display and “–” in the current speed display. Then for a while it will intermittently work for a few seconds and then go back to the —. Eventually it just turns itself off.

I just replaced the battery in the computer a couple of months ago and it doesn’t appear to be low on juice. Is this likely to be a problem with the computer, the wiring harness, or the hub? Is there a quick fix?

I would try replacing the hub battery. If you go to www.saris.com, you can download the manual as a pdf file.

I know that often times I will say “----” when I want to say a bad word but it seems too harsh. Maybe your powertap is trying to tell you something.

Just had a look at the manual pdf and it says 250-300 hours for hub battery life. It very likely does need replacing, as I’m sure I’ve had more time than that on the first battery. Thanks for the idea and the link!

Yeah, it’s probably trying to say, “— you, you’re hurting me so badly with your massive —ing powerful legs that crank out — power”. Or something along those lines.

I think you’ve got the answer there. Mine did the same thing, but I ignored it (and didn’t bother to figure out what was going on) because it was such an intermittent problem - it would go out for 30 seconds to a minute and then it would be fine for the rest of the ride. Well, fast forward a bit and then about 10 miles into the California 70.3 last March it went out and stayed out for the rest of the ride. Needless to say I got a quick lesson in riding based on PE and HR! Change those hub batteries!
