Powertap Question

For all you powertap users…when you race and throw on a rear race wheel (i.e disk) what do you do about the cables and Powertap? Do you disassemble the whole thing and throw on a regular bike computer?

I knew I should’ve spent the extra 5 bucks and just gotten the SRM dura-ace cranks!

Thanks in advance.

Eeee

With the old version (black) I had a wireless HRM computer and speed sensor mounted on the fork, and a second computer mount on the bars, and left the PTap harness on the bike.

With the new Pro (yellow) you just switch to cycle computer mode (4th option and a few menus in), and keep a magnet on the rear wheel by gluing a Radio Shack super magnet (rare earth??) to the disc. Also the SRM is $5 x 440 compared to the Ptap SL.

You can do that with the older versions, too (I have an original Tune Power Tap, and I’ve used it as a 'puter on occasion).

Me? I put a cover on my PT and that’s my race wheel.

Really? Learn something every day. Luckily then I was only super-dork for a couple of months as I upgraded to the pro shortly after I got a PTap.

Mee too.

I have an 808 built into a PT SL hub for this year!

Just glued on the Tufo today.

If one has an older PowerTap CPU, one can use it as a regular bike computer by mounting a magnet on any rear wheel. I use the PowerTap rear wheel for almost everything. If I have to, I mount the CH Aero cover on it.

I just ordered the same setup! Can’t wait to get it!

I leave it all there for smaller races. For an ‘A’ race I take it all off for that clean look. I will have to look into being able to use mine as a bike computer with magnet, I have not seen that in the instructions.

Bet your crossing your fingers hoping it’s not from the bad batch, eh?

I’m hoping mine is not. I live in Australia and it would cost so much to post it back for warranty I may as well throw it in the bin. I’ve had it 18 months now and so far so good. Although I only use it sparingly and never in the rain.

It’s only the SL’s that are having the problem. Not sure exactly what the problem is/was except that it’s the hub electronics (I know…I’m stating the obvious). Whatever the problem, Graber/Cyclops seems to be dropping the ball on their otherwise stellar customer service, and their reputation is really starting to get hurt in the somewhat snooty world of powerdom.

Don’t want to knock the company, though, because I’ve always found their product to be outstanding. People who use powermeters are a demanding bunch - I don’t envy thier job trying to satisfy them.

Funny you should say that about the SL’s having trouble. I have a two year old PowerTap pro and had to get it fixed twice because it wouldn’t work in the rain and the batteries wouldn’t stay in. I got a demo SL this year and it’s working way better… my understanding is part of what they were aiming for with the SL was to eliminate the water problem.

Yes I am ! I want to test it against my other 3 PT’s.
