Besides weight, is there any difference between the two?
I am interested in the differences specifically between the 2007 PowerTap Pro and the previous versions. The '07 PT Pro appears to be very similar to the previous versions of the SL. One of the drawbacks to the previous versions of the Pro (yellow hub) was that it had major issues in lots of water. The SL was more water resistant, if not water proof. It would be a huge plus if the '07 PT Pro has the same water proof qualities as previous versions of the PT SL.
So here is the question: '07 PT Pro, water proof or not?
The improvement in water proofing appears to have come with the o-rings they introduced about 2 years ago. I have an old PT Pro and and a PT SL. I live in Seattle so my PT Pro has seen a ton of rain. Prior to the new o-rings I definitely had problems with water getting in the hub but not since they introduced the new o-rings. My understanding of the biggest difference between the new PT Pro ('07 model) and the older models is that the older one had a cup and cone bearing on one side of the wheel and the other side had a cartridge bearing. The problem is that they wear differently so you get to a point where you have to send the wheel back quite often (depending on how much you ride) to get it adjusted. As a matter of fact I have to send mine back again after about 8 months but it does have a ton of miles on it too. Anyway, it definitely appears like the new PT Pro is much more like the PT SL (although slightly heavier).
Hope that helps,
Chris
The new PowerTap Pro is indeed based on the SL platform, taking advantage of the improved bearing design as well as the carbon fiber hub shell. The new pro is about 160 grams heavier than the SL because we use a steel free hub body and axle. We also use the coded heart rate system developed for the SL 2.4 wireless product to eliminate heart rate interference.
The new Pro, as with the old one, does not come with a Campagnolo option.
So if the cassette bodies between the SL and Pro are non interchangeable, does that mean that it comes with a standard, threaded (Shimano-style) cassette body?, i.e., can the Surly singulator still be used to convert for track (like the old Pro)???
The Surly fixer will not work with the new Pro hub. While the Surly fixer did “work” with the old hub we never recommended it as the PowerTap is not designed for track (or any fixed gear) application.

I’m sure you can guess the next question… Seriously, I know there’s been talk/discussion/threats, but are there any firm plans for a track version? I’ve ‘converted’ an SL for fixed gear TT’ing (don’t worry, I won’t go posting instructions on the i-net), but I would never trust it on the track. BTW, if it were a dedicated version (versus an axle kit), I’d be inclined to think it would be a lot less useful.
I just bought a powertap pro from procyclery in Las Vegas. I was told that the difference between the 2007 Pro and the SL is basically the weight (160 grams). The durability to elements of both hubs is the same. So, I decided to go with the pro since I was on a budget. Please correct me if I am wrong because I can still change my mind (the pro has not arrived yet). Thanks!
Jesse,
I was hoping to get a cradle for my wireless 2.4 so I can use my wheel on my TT bike as well as my road bike. Is this something I can order?
Thanks,
Kat
You can get that from our web store at www.cycleops.com or
That is true, mechanically speaking the 07 Pro and the SL are identical and equally durable.
