PowerTap Hub Servicing Question

My PowerTap SL hub has a considerable amount of miles on it and I’ve noticed that the axle feels a little slow and “gritty” (like there’s dirt or crap in there). Since it’s been years I am guessing I should send it in for service.

Anyone know what a hub maintenance service costs? What do they do? And what’s the turnaround time like?

Thanks.

Jim

Just did this for mine. $350 and takes about 5-7 days. It’s basically a complete rebuild.

Yes, and it is completely rebuilt- new internals, hub bearings, etc. They will also give you a new LYC and mounting kit. Plus a new 1 year warranty. Just got mine back- pretty fair deal imo.

Is that not lifetime? I actually don’t know the answer to that, I do know they are currently on about a 5-6 business day turnaround from when they get them in. Fortunately for me, I drop off and pick up n person. Like this week, for example.

How old is it?

I have two of the really old wired ones that each needed a bearing cone. It was just a standard cone I got from a LBS.

I think I spent $.50 on each one then did the work myself. If the shop did it they would have probably charged $15 or so, really not that much.

Just over 3 years old. Lots of miles on it. I’m wondering if it’s something I can service myself to keep it going. I’ve taken it apart before, greased the pawls and stuff like that and put it back together. But like I said, lately the axle doesn’t spin/move very smoothly.

I think the newer ones have sealed bearings on both sides. It’s not a big job and doesn’t require special tools, most local bike stores could probably handle it. I would ask them.

If it feels gritty I would definitely check it out.

I just sent a training wheel back last week and they are quick with the turn around. Send it USPS…from NJ to WI it was $16…Fed Ex was $60. They do a nice job on the rebuild and you will have a new wheel.
