PowerTap Elite+ / Garmin 310XT: How do I calibrate?

I can’t seem to figure out how to calibrate (or verify the calibration of) the PowerTap with the 310XT. Any help?

Steve

What do you mean by calibration? Is the Garmin reading and displaying power readings from the PT?

On my Edge, and I have the SL+ PT, you have to first detect the PT, then calibrate. From my Edge menu, it’s simply a matter of going to the Accessories, and selecting Ant+. Then I have the option to “restart scan”, don’t select this option until AFTER spinning the power tap wheel in the FORWARD direction for a couple of seconds. Then put the rear wheel down, select the “restart scan” and wait for the Garmin to recognize the Power Meter. Once recognized, then I go back into accessories and press “Calibrate”, and within a few seconds it says calibration complete and fills the 4 digit calibration field. I don’t roll the wheel during calibration. Hopefully the menus are similar in your XT.

Thanks. And, sorry I wasn’t exactly clear. I was trying to get everything set up while I asked the question.

The 310 found the PT as soon as I turned it on. And, I found the calibrate option. I just wasn’t sure whether I was supposed to be coasting or standing still. I’ll give it a try after dinner to see if I get the 4-digit code and the “calibration complete” indication.

It came up with “-2371” for the calibration each of the 5 or so times I tried it. Not sure what that means, but at least it appears to be working…

FWIW, I get -5606 each time. My biggest problem was I was randomly spinning the wheel, not always in the forward direction, and I couldn’t figure out why it would work sometimes, and not others. Then I realized it worked when I spun the wheel forward. Also, I sometimes have calibration problems if the PT is recognized by the Garmin and then I wait several minutes before doing the cal, which I do before each ride. So I always restart the scan immediately before doing the calibration, that way the calibration always works. Good luck.

Are you happy with the 310 or would you get a dedicated unit for the PT?

I love my 310XT as a multisport watch. It is excellent for running, and very good for cycling. The only thing that keeps it as very good for cycling instead of excellent is the lack of rolling averages. You can fake this a little by using the Lap key or the Auto Lap feature. But, it’s still a weakness when cycling with power.

If you are looking for strictly a cycling computer to use with power, the Edge series (500, 705, etc) with rolling averages would be superior. But, you can’t run (easily) with those.

As much as I love buying new toys the handle bars are starting to be cluttered. Getting a SRM installed this week and they asked if I wanted a dedicated unit but since I have the 310 figured I would go that route for a while. Thanks for the response.
