I have decided to get a Powertap Pro+ and start training with Power, I have a coach that is a big supporter of it and can help me use it to its potential. All of that aside, I am not sure on what setup I should run the Powertap. I currently have a pair of Zipp 404’s that I normally race on, but I understand that I need to race on the Powermeter too as well as train on it. . .
So what should I do?
Get the Hub built into:
Mavic Open Pro Wheel
New set of Zipp. If so what set?
Mavic Open Pro Wheel and get a disc cover for it and keep my zipps. … .
My main concern is that I don’t want to really train on my race wheels and I don’t wantt o really buy an extra powertap hub besides my training wheel hub.
I’d go with a SRM, that way the power is in the crank and not the hub.
From what I can tell, most of those are over $3000. I am stretching with the $1200 pricetag of the Powertap.
I don’t know much about the Mavic’s but I’d go with Option #3 but with a different wheel. I’m a fan of HED so I’d get HED Bontonge (sp?). And get a disc cover for that rear and rock that Zipp 404 on the front for races.
PT built onto this rim here, get a wheel cover, and sell your rear 404. The cover will lay better on the rim because of the extra depth, it’ll be a lighter setup, and it’s a better rim than Open Pro.
If you are more than 160lbs you might want to consider running 28 spokes at a minimum, there is a small weight penalty but the wheel will be much more robust if it will be used for training and racing. X2 on the DT 1.1
I am about 185 so yes, I will need to run more spokes.
So it sounds like the Mavic Rim is the best option with a disc cover when racing. Zipp 404 in front.
Any other suggestions? I want to get something within the next week or two, but want to get the right setup. I guess buying another Powertap wheel is always an option, but not for another 3-5 years probably.
I bought the Powertap Pro and had it built into my existing Flashpoint wheel thanks to Rich at Wheelbuilder. I also purchased the Garmin 705 Edge and the total price was under $1,500 for the set-up (with a wheel cover). I couldn’t be happier. I’ve also trained on my race wheels for the past two seasons and they are fairly bomb-proof. I’m an accountant so it is important for me to get my value out of them and reduce my cost per ride. Good luck with whatever you decide…

But if you add in the cost of another set of wheels with Powertap hub, doesn’t that become a little closer in price point?

True. Although. . putting out $1100 or so now and then another $1400 or so 5 years from now is very different than just dumping $3000+ now. .
