I have a pt 2.4 and use parallels with windows…it’s a little tricky but it works fine.
Basically, you save the PT file to your mac. Then use the “parallels shared folder” to drag the file from your “mac” to your “PC” After that you just open the file in cyclingpeaks or whatever else you use and it works fine.
Also, the program that comes with the PT will work on your mac.
I used Parallels for a while, the drivers seem to not work well for me (I’m no techie, but just couldn’t get it right)
Never a fan of BootCamp either.
But the Saris software works on OSX, so why do you need something else? Aren’t you going to use the PT software or something web based? If so, you’re golden. If not, I’m of no assistance at all!
thanks, if the PT software works on mac why did you go with WKO? i wanted to try it b/c my coach suggested it but if it is the difference between a native app and one on windows id rather the native.
i use training peaks now and though it would be easier to migrate power data over with CP. ill try the saris software if it works, cant hurt for a few weeks.
no prob…well I’m sure there’s a thread on here somewhere about WKO and the PT software…but in my experience WKO is about 10 times more useful. it gives your normalized power and all that other stuff…the PT software is fine- just very basic and limited in the analysis you are able to do.
If you already have parallels, it really isnt too big of a pain to view your data in WKO and IMO it’s worth it. That being said, the PT software does get the job done if you are simply trying to look at your power file.
As others have posted, the Power Agent 7 software that you can download from the saris website works on a mac. You will need to buy a USB docking station from Saris, or find a serial to USB adapter that works. I went with the Saris USB for simplicity.
Power Agent is ok, but rather limited in the analysis you can do. If you’ve read *Training and Racing With a Power Meter *you’ll probably want the Training Peaks software. You’ll then need a PC solution. I tried Parallels with the demo version Training Peaks. I was able to transfer files into the software, but it was as if data was missing. I wasn’t able to fully utilize the tools available within Training Peaks.
To download directly into Training Peaks you need a Serial to USB adapter. My understanding is that some work and some don’t. Some that work for some people, don’t work for others.
I’ve been living in a Mac world for so long, I didn’t realize there were still computers and peripherals that had serial ports.
When I used a G4 Powerbook, I used Virtual PC. It was a complete and total pig. However, I could run PowerAgent to download from my PT (SL) then open it in CyclingPeaks. I could not for the life of me get CP to download data from the PT computer. I tried both serial and USB docks with CP (not WKO) to no avail. Grrrrr.
I now use a MacBook Pro. I use XP under Parallels to run WKO, which works like a freaking charm with my USB dock and downloads data from the PT computer with aplomb. One note: things improved in a big, big way when I went from 1G to 2G of memory in the computer. I very much recommend this upgrade.
oh man, this damned powertap (and tri habit) is going to cost me in more ways than i ever imagined. i am going to be upgrading RAM due to a bike upgrade. WTF.
thanks for the tips.
i’ve used all 3 and personally use cyclingpeaks for the added charts, etc.
i’m not sure what the other person means by having to drag files to folders, etc. you just launch parallels/cycling peaks, attach the powertap computer and select the usb-serial and click download. works great.
