There was spam or a virus saying that the race was closed. It is open.
after hanging out with some friends this past weekend who are making the trip, i’m starting to think about it. need to check the vacation time and how many free tickets I have left for airlines.
Although I think I am still thawing out from last years race, I may be back this year. (Note: the race moved from the middle of May to the end of Sept. this year)
I have been eyeing that race for a year now. This will be my first race over a sprint distance. Any helpful hints? I am planning on 3:15 to 3:25 range. Don’t worry I don’t draft and stay to left so you will not have to say on the left.
I just bought a 12-26 gear. that should be good
How about this for a newbie ??? As a sprinter I have no clue how a bottle exchange works. Do i just grab one on the fly and pitch my old one to the curb?
Sprints only require water. For Ohio I have been training to take on 200-250 cal an hr, 20-28 oz water, and 1 salt tab per 1.5 hrs. seems to work for me. Does that sould good
Looking at results from last year it is odd to see so many DNFs. It must have been terrible weather and survival mode. I can already hear the HTFU comments ringing in my ears
Anyone done the computrainer Powerman Ohio course? Is it close to what I should expect? I will not see the course until the day before the race.
I was looking at past results (only 3 finishers in my AG last year) and signup info about 20 minutes ago. Was planning on doing the race till I saw it would cost me $95 to enter. Too expensive for me. I’m spoiled by all these low fee races in Ohio.
I paid $95 for LUMS POND duathlon yesterday (never again). On top of that the park charged us $6 just to get into race. The RD said it should not have happened and he would think of donating the money we paid in entry fees(for park entrance) to charity. Bet he doesn’t but who cares won’t happen again. By the way I bet for $95 Ohio provides more than 4 toilets for 400+ athletes.
i have rode the course before, that gearing is more than enough, i will be riding an 11x23 i think.
as for the nutrition, you will need to work and figure that out for yourself.
i know for a fact that fatrabbit runs their races very well, and have never had an issue with any of theirs. for long course nationals and a worlds qualifier, i dont think 95 is out of the question for races fees.
as for the course its self, the run is tough, with a long mile uphill at the start of both runs, the bike is rolling with a long flat section and two moderate hills.
pacing wise, i am shooting for a steady but hard first run, smooth through the first 2/3 of the bike and picking it up from mile 25 on, and hammering the last run.
Chuck M - I understand your statement about the low entry fees in Ohio. However, I think you need to look at each race on its own merits and particulars. Certain races have different cost structures based on location, amenities, traffic control requirement, park fees, licenses and event support.
For example Powerman Ohio participants receive a long sleeve Brooks technical shirt (not just your typical cotton shirt). Additionally, we pay a fixed fee + provide a portion of each entry fee to the Park to help with its conservation needs. We do this for all our races. No other Ohio race organizers I’m aware of shares in this manner with the park. As an athlete and race organizer, I’m very sensitive to entry fees and understand that every one has their price decision points so your view is very much understood (note: fee is $85 and not $95).
I hope you decide to participate - I think the course itself offers some exciting challenges that will undoubtedly provide you with a memorable experience.
Perhaps there are some other athletes who have done the race in the past can share their experience with the course?
Powerman should be a nice challenge for your first long course race.
12-26 should be plenty of gear. There are only a couple of steep hills.
IIRC, there wasn’t a bottle exchange on the bike. You need to bring everything you need with you from the start.
Nutrition is personal, but that sounds ok. I wouldn’t try to put down any more cals.
Last year it was brutally cold (in May), about 40-50 degrees, rain, and wind. It took most of the 2nd run for my feet to thaw out. I lot of people were really cold and dropped out after the 1st lap of the bike. Your hands got so numb, it was hard to shift.
Hopefully the weather will be better in Sept., or at least I will be better prepared. I raced in a tri suit with arm and knee warmers, and lightweight running gloves. I should have thrown on my jacket for the bike.
I looked at the results and pictures from last year. Nice numbers last year, you would have been competetive in the pro div.
I was leaning toward the 12-26 gear because I have heard the bike was tough. At 160# I climb well so I will just pack my lower gears and decide after seeing the course
Now the run is starting to make me nervous. (stonger on bike than run)

It is $85 to enter. The extra $10 USAT charges isn’t going to the RD. Why don’t you have an annual membership?
