Powerbar Perform instead of Gatorade?

Anyone know the nutritional info? This is kinda huge and I expect rest of the road races and marathons will follow…

I’m looking, too.

Not necessarily true. Road races and marathons will follow if they sign new contracts with PowerBar and not Gatorade. They can’t just up and switch whenever they want (unless they don’t have a sponsorship/contract with a beverage company).

I think that the Powerbar endurance formula is a better product than Gatorade Endurance (personal opinion). But I’m not sure what the “perform” fomula is. Hopefully BrianPBN can chime in. But all in all, I think powerbar is a company with more of a focus on making good endurance products than Gatorade is, so I think it’s a good thing.

WHY NEW IRONMAN PERFORM?:
Features unique 2:1 glucose to fructose optimized carbohydrate blend based on groundbreaking research published in the February 2008 issue of Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise and ongoing carbohydrate oxidation field trials conducted through the Nestle Research Center. The 2:1 blend has been shown to help athletes perform better, increase fluid delivery and experience less perceived exertion following exercise compared to glucose alone. Ironman PERFORM sports drink also delivers essential electrolytes, including 190 mg of sodium per serving, to help replenish what athletes lose in sweat and help avoid skeletal muscle cramps and dehydration.

KEY FEATURES:
Light, great-tasting flavors help encourage athletes to maximize fluid consumption during exercise. Each 8-fluid ounce serving includes:
• 17 grams of carbohydrates in proprietary glucose to fructose blend found to improve endurance performance by 8 percent
• 190 mg sodium, a key electrolyte lost in sweat that is associated with muscle cramping in some athletes
• 70 calories

Yah its kinda funny that slowtwitch is breaking the news here, Ironman is sending out emails, and powerbar hasn’t updated their website to share the nutritional info with everyone. Is it possible that this is just the Powerbar endurance drink rebranded? THe info that Herbert found makes it look the same. Same carbs, sodium, and calorie per serving as the endurance formula on Powerbars website.

What it sounds like is they struck this deal with Ironman and rebranded their product with new flavors. Still based on glucose and fructose.

Yeah, I’m trying to tell if this is the same as Powerbar Endurance or not- can’t figure it out. Powerbar.com has nothing on this. Is it sold in powdered form too, for those of us who want to try it in training, or just premixed bottles? Gatorade is such a staple out there, very curious about the reaction to this- especially from athletes who’ve been training with one thing expecting it on the course!

• 17 grams of carbohydrates in proprietary glucose to fructose blend found to improve endurance performance by 8 percent

So we should see Ironman times drop 8% across the board this year?

I bet powerbars website is updated shortly. And as usual, slowtwitch is way ahead of the curve. I bet that it will be available in both powered and liquid form.

…hope this stuff doesn’t taste like Yak milk!

Just from my own experiences, everything I have had with the Powerbar name on it has been fantastic.
If they start handing out Cola flavoured Power bites at IM races, I will race every freakin one of them and load myself up.

I’m looking at a pwrbar endurance canister as I type and
the contents are the same as stated above
70 cal/8oz
Na 190
k 10
total carb 17g
containing glucose and fructose
So the only thing new is the name
.

Does anyone know if there is any real fruit/juice in them? I’m deathly allergic to mangoes and one of the flavors is organge/mango.

I’m a Gatorade Sports Science Institute “Lab Rat”. There are about 350 athletes who test Gatorade products who would beg to differ on the “testing new products” out part of your statement.

I’ve been testing Gatorade products since 1998.

Regardless, we have to use whatever the race buys/gets sponsorship to use. I like PowerBars and PowerGels. Could be a good thing.

Hope you are healing well Rappstar.

And as of recently, neither does Gatorade ( in powder or pre-mixed forms ).

I ran out of fluids on a hotter than usual ride recently, and stopped at a gas station and saw the “new” gatorade. No HFCS in the ingredients. I think it tastes a bit different ( not as shockingly sweet ) and I actually liked it.

Does Gatorade include High Fructose Corn Syrup? Why or Why not?
Currently, G2 does not contain HFCS, and the remaining products from The Gatorade Company will soon be following suit. We are changing the source of carbohydrate in Gatorade Thirst Quencher in 2010 to a sucrose-dextrose blend, which still serves the important functional purpose of providing energy to fuel athletes’ working muscles during activity. What’s important to note is that from a scientific efficacy standpoint nothing will change, and our research shows the taste with the sucrose-dextrose blend is actually preferred by many athletes.

I’ve met the folks from Gatorade as well. I agree that there is plenty of good science there, but it’s still the same company that makes a “fitness water.”

I’m more disappointed the Gatorade swim is going away. I imagine PERFORM isn’t much different from Gatorade Endurance so it will more or less just be an issue of possible GI problems. A little bit of testing and you’ll know if you can or can’t drink it.
