I know the topic of power has been trashed around an terrible lot but i am close to making a purchase and am just looking for some last minute advice.
after all of the saving i have come up short and am not going to be able to afford a srm pro version.
my question is srm amateur or ergomo??..they are around the same price on ebay!!
any help appreciated.
Wait another month, save some more money. How much are you short, we can start a donation drive for you to get an SRM pro ![]()
are the differences between the amateur and the pro that notable??
i have around 1200usd which is about the going rate for the srm am or the ergmo on ebay
I wouldn’t buy the SRM Amateur.
May i compel you to give a reason??
Not accurate enough. Even though that be compelling reason only for some ![]()
How bad is the accuracy?? and does the degree of inaccuracy merit the purchase of the ergmo??
have heard some horror stories about the ergmo.
powertap is not an option, how could it be? being stuck with one set of wheels…

A lot of us use one set of wheels with a PT. Even if you have 2 bikes, you just mount the sensors on each bike and swap out the rear wheel. If you build the PT into a decent wheel, you can race with it or add a wheel cover and you’ve got a pretty good racing setup.
the power tap just isnt an option. do you suggest getting the pt built into a carbon wheel??
if so secondly do you suggest training on that carbon wheel??..just dosent work for me!
any idea on the draw backs of the srm amateur compared with the pro??..i know accuracy is an issue but how much of an issue and should i steer away from the srm am in favour of a ergmo??

Most of the horror stories I’ve heard about the Ergomo have been the result of bad installs. If you face and chase the bottom bracket, pay attention to the BB sensor orientation during installation, and perform the initial calibration correctly I don’t think the Ergomo is any more problematic than any other power meter. I’ve never had an issue with mine, but I haven’t had it for that long.

In addition to what Jason said, have you priced out the price of 2 PTs (PT Pro + PT SL)? Or get a used PT Pro for training and a PT SL for racing if you really need to save money. You only need one computer. You can easily do it for around the same price as one Ergomo.
Also, as Paulo said, if the choice is between SRM Amateur and Pro then definitely go with the latter. Without going into detail, it’s just a more solid product.
Thanks, Chris
For questions about the SRM models, I’d send a PM to trukweaz (Kurt Perham). He’s a great coach who also sells SRMs. He’s your man for a good price on those units.
