Lance’s coach on OLN said Lance can exceed 900 watts in a short sprint. Is this possible?
OLN said Lance could do 1500+
.
if Carmichael said Lance could do 900 for a sprint, that’d be a confirmation that he really doesn’t coach him…900w, pretty much any cat 1-2 rider can do that in a sprint for a few seconds.
I am Captain slowtwitch (little s), and i can put that out
.
same here…and i am 144lbs and can’t sprint at all
.
I really suck, I am 138lb and my sprinting max on my repeats is only about 750W! All the 800W weaklings kick sand in my face! Yet at my VO2 max my power output is 440???
I believe I only have two fast twitch fibers, one of those got lost, the other went out to look for it and never came back…
What’s up with that? That is the 3rd or 4th time in the past week you have eluded to Carmichael not coaching Armstrong. Details?
marketing stuff.

I’m part way through Lance Armstrong’s War, and it appears to me that Ferrari is in charge of the really important stuff. Charmichael seems more in charge of the big picture, like the full-year plan, diet, etc.
In the book, the author calls Ferrari the “trainer” and Charmichael the “coach.” In any event, Ferrari isn’t in the Lance camp anymore.
In defense of Charmichael and his “900 watt” quote – he certainly knows about wattage levels, especially Lance’s. Make no mistake – Charmichael knows what’s what. Whenever someone says “watts” you have to ask “for how long.” Perhaps he meant a full 60-second windup; perhaps others mean just the final 5 seconds. Whatever he meant – he knows about power outputs.

I’ve seen 5-6 minutes thrown around as an appropriate length test for a VO2 max on the bike, if I remember correctly. 7w/kg for 5-6 minutes is exceptional.
Anyway, as Ashburn noted, it’s meaningless without a time associated to it. Most sprints are longer than 5 seconds right? I imagine that 900 number would be a figure closer to 30-60 seconds. I’d also be pretty impressed/surprised if he could put out 1500+ watts.
You might be shocked at how “little” wattage he would put out. First off, its at the end of a long, long stage. Second, he has developed his slow twitch fibers alot more than his fast. I’m willing to bet that he puts out a little more (say 1100) but I read somewhere that Pettachi does 1700. In the same way Lance can’t sprint like Pettachi, Pettachi could never have the endurance like Lance.
Sure, he can exceed 900w, I notice that the key word here is exceed
.
Cipo sprinted around 1650 watts…
Easily. In the kilo on the track, world class cyclists average over 900 watts for over a minute and peak at over 2000 watts. That sort of number given on OLN is sort of meaningless without context - can he do it at the end of a five hour TdF stage or only when he’s fresh?. I weigh less than Lance and I can do about 1250 watts for a few seconds. But he could easily drop me on a flat road. He actually dropped me in a mountain bike race over ten years ago on a downhill section.
I’m sure Lance can hold the 900 for a little while. His 7 watts per KG is exceptional and not many people can do that. Sprinting over 1000 for 5 seconds is not that hard for a Cat4 or 3. But holding it is.
You didn’t mention that CC said TdF riders can TT at 450-500w for 30 mins. Riiiiiight.
From what he’s said and written over the years, it’s been obvious for a long time that CC could not coach a TdF winner.
Why not? There are a few people who could do that for an hour or so - certainly there are quite a few who could go at that pace for 30 minutes. Hell, I’m out of shape and my CP20 is right around 400. In 2001, I believe LA’s LT power was estimated (by plugging the numbers into analyticalcycling.com) at around 485 watts up Alpe D’Huez at the end of a long stage.
I’m not a fan of Carmichael, but to suggest this guy doesn’t know a lot about training is unfair - he knows about training with power, and was advocating it for training and athletic evaluation long before most people even heard of an SRM, powertap, etc.
Actually, it was his comments on training by/with power that showed he was rather ignorant about it.

Just seems really high to me. I was thinking the same thing about LA and Alp d from last year, thought it was 445w. Anyway, 500 just seems like a huuuuuuuuuuge number for 30 mins.
As for CC, I’m sure he knows plenty. Nowhere near as much as his marketing would suggest, though.
