Power meter survey (1)

We’re looking for as many cyclists as possible to complete our online survey of views and opinions on power meters. Even if you don’t have a power meter we want you in the survey. It’s open to all cyclists, of any persuasion and any level, and everyone who completes the survey can enter a draw to win a pair of Detec carbon wheels. The survey runs until 1st March 2009. See www.brimbrothers.com/survey/

Thanks to all who have already completed the power meter survey, and a reminder to those who haven’t that it closes next weekend.

So here’s one for Sters out there; how will this power measuring system work?

My guess, based on the survey question about pedal types is that measurements will be taken by a cleat like device. That’d fit in with the idea of a power meter that doesn’t require changing any equipment.

edit - perhaps a power measuring spacer between the pedal and crank arm? Great if you could get the electrics small enough!

Someone’s done a bit of research over here:

.

That seems very interesting. The survey didn’t ask about this so I’ll say it here, open source download and analysis software that work on Linux is very important to me. Any estimate on when your product will be available?

We’re still in the development stage, so it will be at least a year before we have a product. We’ll continue to post information about our progress on our website.

We’re being deliberately vague about details at the moment for two reasons. First, we don’t want to make promises about schedules or performance until we know we can meet them. Second, we believe our technology will be a significant step forward for power meters and we want to make sure we will be able to make the most of the opportunity (i.e. we don’t want our competitors to know too much too soon).

Sorry I can’t say more. It’s very interesting to read the various guesses about what we’re planning - some is right and much is wrong but I’m not saying which is which! Still, we welcome all suggestions and discussion. We read it all with great interest.
