I’m thinking of getting a power meter. As we are coming to the end of the
season and a lot of stuff has come out at Interbike. What are the chances
of there being a chance to pick up a power meter “cheap”. Currently looking
at Powertap and Stages.
How are these wheels for racing? Are they quality rims? It sounds like the best deal. I am hesitant about the cheaper power meters that are <600$…
Those would be terrible wheels for racing. But for training, they would be okay.
Ummm…well, they’d actually be fine for racing in most cases.
Are you missing the podium in your age group at Ironman by a few minutes? Yeah, then they are not a good choice. Are you middle of pack at IM (like me)? Then they are fine.
Power2Max has been selling their Classic models at discount lately. Really good PM for a decent price. Especially if you get a crank and chainrings from them at the same time.

^^This and a $99 disk cover from wheelbulder and you’re good. Look for a nice cheap carbon front wheel for racing next year and train with power until then.
+1 on Power2Max. I took them up on the offer for the classic on sale. Super happy and unit works great. No hassle. Like it so much, I will probably be buying a second.
Those wheels are on sale today for $639, with free shipping, and that includes a headunit/computer.
That is a crazy price for a proven technology from a brand with great customer service.
I notice the wheel on sale at Performance says the hub is for an 11 speed cassette. I assume I can still use it with a 10 speed? Also, would someone be so kind as to explain whether the G3 is so inferior to the SL that this isn’t worth buying? As best I can tell from dcrainmaker, there’s no reason not to get the G3, so I am all-in if I don’t need to upgrade my groupset to 11 speed.
Thanks. Another newbie question. My current wheels are 23 cm. The Cycleops are 21 cm. I gather from a bit of Googling that I can use the same 23 cm tires even on the narrower rims. Is that right? Any downside to doing so?
You should be fine. Obviously there’s some instability in going to a thinner rim width, but nothing that’s going to be very noticeable to you. So in other words - negligible. Good luck!
Flo has their 30 rims in stock, so you can upgrade those training rims to a decent set of race worthy rims for 160$ + labor (though you MIGHT need spokes as well)
