Potty training (1)

A week before my daughter turned two she said she had to go potty for the first time. Shehad three more accidents over the next week and that was it. Insanely easy.

My son has been pretty difficult. he is 2 1/2 and we have been trying for several months. He seemed into it for a bit but lost interest. We inticed him with a sticker chart and he got a new toy when he got a full row. He just doesnt even try anymore.

got any sweet tips for me?

We talking pee, poo, or both?

With my son we used those pull up diapers. He seemed to get the poop thing going pretty easily. We got him one of those little plastic kid potties…

… and praised him when he used it. Kind of sucks to clean but you should be used to kid crap by now.

I really think he just didn’t want to crap his pants anymore.

With the pee we just let him walk around all day with no pants on. That way he got a visual of when he peed so he could relate it to the feeling of having to go. He still likes to pee outside.

Ha. Same exact scenario here. Out of no where at 27 months my daughter declared she was done with pull ups and that was it. My son is now over 3 and we are still working. Of course in his case, he refuses to go. We are talking 3, 4, 5 days. He spent 2 hours on the potty last night, a good chunk of time on the potty at day care today, and then another 2 hours on the potty tonight before he finally went. Prior to going he screams that he doesn’t have to go and will never go on it again, he hates it etc. Then when he finally goes he is the happiest kid you have ever seen. Don’t get why he doesn’t see the correlation yet. We have tried everything, with gifts, threats (he can’t move on to the pre-school room in daycare until he is potty trained), forgetting about it for a couple weeks, fiber, and mira lax. Noting has worked yet so we suffer on, 3 to 4 months of this so far.

I think it is just the difference between boys and girls.

Both, he only ever tried to pee though. I bring him on the bathroom so he can see me go but that doesnt seem to help. He does have his own plastic potty. every time he runs around without a diaper he ends up pissing someplace I want to sit.

I don’t have anything to add to this thread, but I must say that I’m sitting here eating a late late dinner and reading about pee and poop did not slow me down at all. I think the internet has desensitized me.

I know it is a matter of convenience, but I don’t know that it is good to push them too young. When he’s ready, he’ll be ready. When they’re five years old it won’t matter anymore - unless he has issues from pushing too hard.

I took that approach with my son and it worked just fine. In fact, just last week he declared that he was ready to give up diapers. It’s a good thing, because all the other 7th graders were making fun of him.

Having kids desensitized me to poop. Just last night I took off my sons pants to change his diaper and found out the hard way that poop was smeared down his leg. I noticed it when there was an avocado green smear in my white comforter where his leg touched.

Delightful.

Hahah

We actually arent pushing him just encouraging fruitlessly.

Being desensitized. My son is autistic, and has problem processing dairy. In fact, before we discovered he was autistic - we let him drink lots of milk. That caused him to get impacted. When your son is on the changing table struggling, sweating and hurting while trying to push out a rock - parental instinct kicks in and you get your pinky finger dirty. It all washes off.

On the upside. Since taking him off dairy, those problems have gone away. Also, I quit biting my fingernails.

You are bringing back flashbacks I have suppressed for two decades.

3yr old here and no joy. He will poop 2 nights on the potty then back to his pull up.
My good friends soon has very serious GI trouble after they made him sit on the throne for hours. He hated it so he held it. He is on some heavy duty meds and has a hard time knowing when he has to go. He is now 7 and a super kid. I was asking around for advise and tips and seem to hear lots of horror stories.

Just when I think my son has it nailed he cooks up a hot one in his diaper. Oh the joy.
Good luck. Everyone says we will look back and laugh…

My parents like to bring up how they used to do that to me. Im sure you wanted to know that.

The one thing that Parents and Triathletes are not afraid to talk about at parties is poop and pee.

“I had horrible runners trots.” “Pissed all over my bike.”

“Oh my god. I went into little Suzies room and she was painting the walls with poop”.

No advice for ya really. I have 3 girls. The first 2 were pretty easy. The 3rd one is 21 months old and not quite ready yet (but I want to give it a try soon). I CANNOT wait for the day that I no longer have to wipe any more butts. Wifey and I have been married for 8.5 years. Instead of some sort of 10 year anniversary celebration/trip/etc, we have decided that we are going to have a massive party when there are no more diapers in the house.

Take a copy of Procycling and roll it up tight. When wee or poo is produced away from the potty deliver a swift pop to the nose.

How long before training did you introduce him to the potty? Our son had it around from just after his 2nd bday and we let him get used to it and then trained him using the same approach and he was trained by 2 1/2.

When the idea of big girl panties registered in my daughters brain she couldn’t be stopped. She would sit on her little throne even if business didn’t need to be done. My son was hard to help because he didn’t understand the need. I mean you can shit without moving so why move? Shit was shit to him and couldn’t care less. It was really funny to me.

Our daughter is almost 20 months and not ready yet. Even if she was she would have trouble because of her cerebral palsy… she’s not walking yet but is bum scooting around the house like crazy…

Bum scooting is awesome! It makes me giggle every time. Give her a huge hug from her creepy Uncle Tibbs.

I think boys on average are 3 before they potty train. We aren’t even trying yet (2 years and 8 months here). We have a few things to do before we get there - like give up the pre nap and pre bedtime bottle. No potty training happening when he ingests 8-10 ounces right before sleeping!

This is what we are going to try. After lengthy discussions with family and friends, we have a game plan - we’ll see how it goes in a few months when we start.

  1. No pullups - EVER. Especially at night. They are diapers. They absorb, etc.
  2. Buy big boy underwear - Have him wear it with clothes. After he pisses/poops in it - take him to the bathroom and make him wait for a minimum of 5 minutes (say while you clean up where the mess leaked out) in the nasty wet and or poopy pants and underpants. He might just get uncomfortable and realize he doesn’t like this feeling. Changing him/cleaning him up right away, he doesn’t understand the ramifications of being wet/dirty without a diaper. (This one comes from a daycare provider who has the kids stand outside if they have accidents during recess. She says it only happens once or twice, then they ask to go even when having fun with the other kids outside). Don’t see why not trying it in the house would prove any different.
  3. A month before you take the diapers off, pre nap, have him sit on the potty. Immediately upon waking, take him to the potty, same for nighttime. Gets his body used to emptying out prior to sleeping. All while still in diapers, so if he’s peeing still, no big deal. But some people who did this said by the end of the month (religiously doing this), the diapers were dry (or very nearly dry) after nap and bedtime. Definitely helped out when the diapers were off for good.
  4. If you try an “every 30 minutes he gets to sit on the potty to try to go” schedule, after a minute if he hasn’t gone, done. Don’t make him sit there for ever until he goes. If he wants to sit there, fine, but if he wants off, fine too.
  5. Give him the opportunity, but don’t force the issue.

LIke I said before, nothing proven by me, but family and friends all had success using these tips. I know I can’t wait to only have 1 in diapers sooner than later! Good luck!

Trade him for a girl.

My 18 year-old All State, State Championship high school quarter back was 3 and a half before he was potty trained. There is hope.
