Tollakson won the amateur at MIM and Accenture last year. He had a faster bike split than all the pros at Accenture and I think only Remaly beat him on the bike at MIM. He also won AG nationals after getting hit by a car 9 days before the race. He just turned pro this year and started doing this full time.
You forgot swim! I see Tim swim all the time and that dude is fast. Take a look at the swim times. Those ITU boys can swim WICKED fast. Potts thumped him in the water.
Granted, Tim just doesn’t really focus on his swim. He could easily change some of his training and swim MUCH faster.
I dont know. I hear so many “drafting sucks” dudes talk about the only thing you need to do is run fast. Many lame-ass peep’s in these parts think that you can get away with doing almost nothing in the swim and bike because you can draft, then hang it all out on the run.
I cant really talk though. I couldn’t swim 25 minutes right now. My sorry ass body is falling apart. Havent trained in almost 8 weeks now and I STILL am having problems with my ankle. Woke up in the middle of the night last night with a pain that felt like a blow torch on my ankle. WTF is that?!?!?
I’m jealous of anyone who has a fully functioning body right now. especially the dudes I should be racing right now!!!
Wasn’t he also 1st person out of the water at the 2004 Olympics? Regardless of whether an ITU racer needs to be able to swim that fast, fact is Potts can swim!
Good job AR. I’ve always wanted to see Memphis In May pictures to see if it was as crowded as they say around here. It doesn’t look too bad. I’ll have to do it next year.
I see you guys are wearing wetsuits. This morning we did Four State Triathlon in Texarkana, TX, not too far from you guys, and the water felt literally hot or very warm. Not sure what the hell was going down here. I thought the water would be freezing cold, but apparently not.
To make the first pack in an ITU race you need to swim about 4:00-4:10 for 400m LC. 4:15-4:25 for the second pack and 4:30 will have you looking at the third pack.
I think potts was an ncaa champion, and his trials effort in the 400 IM would have qualified him for the team in any other country. Interesting to see that dave was only 14 seconds off in the swim; dave swam at UK but he was not an ncaa champ(I was on the u23 national select team with him); I think open water equalizes a little bit. Also, I think dave just finished up a semester of law school, so I’m impressed that he was so fit in the swim.
To give you a perspective on necessary swim times in ITU, our slowest swimmer(fastest runner) on the u23 select team would come in about a 1:20to 1:30 back from Dave (so a little faster than Deboom, I do realize that deboom is purpose built for a very different purpose). That far back he would never make the bike packs, and was never able to place well even though he could 10-k faster than many high end elites.
Yep, awesome race–definitely put it on the list of ones to do. Some folks did end up wearing wetsuits anyways (mostly Team in Training people). Funny because Saturday, for the mtn. bike race, the water was 76 degrees. Saturday was sunny and decently warm, but not steaming–but apparently that was enough to warm it up to 80 degrees…? It definitely didn’t feel hot, or even very warm…
That’s probably a decent guide, but it varies a huge amount. There are plenty of great pool swimmers who get reamed in open water, 200 flyers, 400 IMers and the like tend to fair better than a 400 freestyler; but again there are no hard and fast rules.
I’d say that (for americans, since we do a lot of short course) you would be hard pressed to make the first pack if you couldn’t break 4:30 (4:35 you might make it if you’re much better in waves and chop) in the 500 freestyle during high-school. If you’re up to that level in your teen years, you can more easily maintain good enough swim speed on the severely reduced yardage that triathletes do.
I also had no intention of slamming deboom. I would be worried for his sake if he was swimming with potts. The amount of muscle mass and metabolic shift required to make that leap would hurt his efficiency in a 8.5 hour race tremendously. He performs very well at what he is meant to do.
