Hi all,
I finished Beach2Battleship as my first full iron race in October and (shocker) would like to get a tattoo to commemorate it.
This is the design I’ve come up with. I really like it, but dont’ LOVE it. Any ideas on how to tweak it?
Thanks!

Not trying to be critical but it looks like the number is i40.6 as it is not 140.6.
Possibly having the numbers the same size and having the swim on the right of the number the bike above and the run to the right. I like the design you have for the sbr. good luck and congrats on the B2B!!
Where are you putting this? It might affect people’s recommendations to you. Is it just black or are you adding colors?
How about shifting the 140.6 to be on the same line as the swim and run so that the bike is on the top line by itself?
I’m thinking of keeping it on color…either black or a shade of blue. And It’s going to go on my right wrist, so will be pretty small.
Good point on the 1 looking like an I. I think I like the font least of all…
what’s with the boobies?
LOL! I hadn’t seen them before, but now I can’t help but see them. Too funny. THAT change will certainly be made.
yeah the font is too squarish for the flow of the SBR icons
You could have the sbr icons and then continue to 140.6 in a new font that flows/sweeps
it would be like saying swim bike run for 140.6 instead of saying swim bike run AND 140.6 as 2 different things
.
get with the times Mo, change it to kilometres, also looks like you’ve raced longer.

I had the same thought. The distance is known as 226. 96% of the world is on the metric system. Some time soon the US might take a leap forward to the 20th century and join them.
If you like old school, why not put the distance in cubits. That’ll be a really big number.
And It’s going to go on my right wrist, so will be pretty small.
If it’s going to be that small, the general design (detail) you have there is going to look like a crap in a few years when the edges start getting blurry. Just FYI.
Try not to take offense to this but…
I just don’t think you’ll be happy with this in the long run (pun intended)
If all goes well, there will be lots of runs you would be proud of accomplishing. You may be tempted to ink one, then another, and well that next one has to be on because it you did it faster, the next one was more challenging, and so on until the 140.2 seems just like parachute pants in the 80s.

I like the design, but I wonder… Why even have the 140.6 on there at all? The reason I ask that is to point out something – why are you getting the tat? If it’s for you, then the number is irrelevant – you know it was B2B, which is a 140.6. Or if it’s to show off… Well, that’s another issue for psychologists to discuss (and plays into the old joke about how you know the triathlete at the party).
So my recommendation is to dump the number and jack up the size of the symbols.
And my other recommendation to ANYONE wanting to get a tattoo: Draw out your own design, then put it up on your bathroom mirror where you’ll see it every day. If you still love it a year later, and it still means as much to you then as the day you put it up, then go ahead with the tat. If not, then you didn’t really want it in the first place.
You are right from a design viewpoint that there is something not right with this. As a designer my issue would be that the graphics and the typeface are not a good match. The graphics speak ‘soft energy’ and the typeface is ‘hard formal’. You have tried to lift the type by using a drop shadow and am not sure how this translates to a tattoo.
In terms of the graphics
Swim: Lighten the thickness of the wave form, the right end works well as an implied front arm but narrow and straighten the lest of the wave to imply leg form.
Bike: Good breast comments the body is ok and the front wheel implies forwards motion in contrast the rear wheel looks heavy and static.
Run: main comment femal form is this intended? Secondly the eleogation of the front leg is a little extreme needs cutting back a little.
The graphic could work well with a little tweaking here and there and is a pretty good effort if this is not your normal line of work/expertise. You need to re-examine the typeface.
Well done for posting on here are it shows bottle and also the fact you knew something was not quite right. Things like this are not easy and once you get close spend time living with it before making a commitment. I have been through this a couple of times when designing for my own companies and it is difficult to distance yourself at times from what you produce. Seek out opinions like mine (I am diagnosed as autistic, hence the nature of response, nothing personal) you don’t have to take them on board but you do need to be happy with them before having the tattoo done. Good luck!

So I did what you said and I freaking hated it before I even finished it… I think you need to stipulate that you should be at least decent at drawing too.
Win.
That is awesome.
Cheers, Chris
LMFAO!!!

Exactly. I have small roman numerals on my wrist and they’ve blurred up quite a bit.
wyo, frickin’ hillarious!
ak, i think they should all have, or no one should have, a ponytail. maybe get away without the swimmer having one. those of us who know and understand tri could get that that could imply a swimcap. but to me it looks like there is a dude on the bike, chick running. if you are a chick i think the ponytail is cute.
worthless $.02 input. think looooong and hard about putting this somewhere on your body that would be inconvenient to cover up. i.e. your grand kid gets married in az in august. good luck though with whatever ya’ do.

And many employers require them to be covered.
Sure make fun of me… I may not be a fine arts major… but whatever. 2012
