We have a package that was expected late last week. After it did not come today, I went ahead and checked the tracking; says it was delivered at 12:59pm on our front porch on Saturday (the 6th). We were home at the time, the postman never came. I call customer service and explain the situation - the rep tells me that more than likely it was signed off as delivered at the office, but the delivery man never got it on the truck so we should expect it in the next day or two. Apparently this is very common practice this time of year. Our mail has already been delivered for the day, the package did not come. The customer service rep did open a case and take down my information and said I should be receiving a call in the next 48hrs.
Why is it more acceptable to fraudulently sign-off that a package was delivered than to just deliver the package late?
It shouldn’t be considered acceptable. However, it’s human nature.
Sometimes some units in the military will draw ammo from the armory, and register it as expended before they head to the range. Then if they don’t actually expend it all at the range, they’re left with some amount of ammo that has been declared expended, but is still there. I know of one unit who had one of their guys get stopped for speeding, and the cops found boxes and boxes of unexpended ammo, grenades, etc in the back of his truck left over from the range, but “accounted for” as expended.
It’s a mess, and typically speaks to poor records keeping and accountability.
We deal with problems on our street of misdelivered mail year around. Not even close to our street our guys don’t even look it’s not possible. We have people coming from 3 blocks over with mail and visa versa. We all complain…the problems never stop. Been on my street 11 years and it’s just pathetic.
At least the USPS gave you a somewhat plausible answer.
I ordered a camera lens off EBay recently, was given a tracking number and watched the tracking as it was shipped from the seller in Florida to the Greensboro processing facility, only to be returned to the seller in Florida. USPS could not comment as to why it wasn’t delivered other than I might have an “undeliverable” address (I don’t live on a postal route out in the country).

This. Same thing happened to me in a week. One package was immediately returned to sender and the other to the post office. Never was a notice left.
Yes, because we all know that govt is evil, the police are out to get you in a choke hold, and people in the private sector never do anything wrong.
To you and Quel, when that shit is done in the private sector it’s usually illegal. When the PO or the military do it, well that’s just the way things are done.
in my limited experience when receiving a package USPS that requires signature the carrier will just leave a note on the door to come to the office to sign for it. I used to think I just didn’t hear the knock at the door, but it turns out my carrier just wouldn’t bring the package. Just the note that it was ‘attempted’.
I figure they just didn’t want the hassle of carrying stuff and having to knock on the door to get a signature. Much easier to pretend that you tried and make the receiver go to the office. Little different when using parcle post, but the small stuff was almost never actually delivered to my house if it required a signature.

Had that happen several times as well. Apparently this package didn’t require a signature, so that wasn’t an option (prefer it was, we’re 1/4 mile from the post office). The postman never visited our home on Saturday, we had no mail whatsoever.
The package is our pedals and trainer tires for the new bikes we got for Christmas. My wife has been getting really anxious to ride, but kind of hard without pedals and the bike currently has cross tires, not about to put those on the trainer (it’s 30 outside and my wife has Reynaud’s Syndrome). Have a feeling we’ll be calling Nashbar and having them resend the items, and waiting another week; just doesn’t seem logical that the package has been sitting at the post office since last Thursday, it says it has been delivered, and that they actually know where it is.

Sorry, but no.

Nothing in this thread should have given you the impression that lack of accountability is “just how things are done.” I said it’s human nature, and it doesn’t seem all that controversial an idea to me that a lot of human nature involves laziness. That doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. In fact, my very first sentence indicated that this sort of thing is not acceptable.
For the example I provided, the Sailor in question was charged with several UCMJ violations, and an investigation was conducted into the command’s accountability practices, resulting in other disciplinary actions for various members. I can only speak for the Navy, but we probably go overboard in accountability processes and inspections.
