Possibly the most useless piece of information

is the 10-day forecast. I know this; it changes all the time. That being said, right now it looks like weather porn for IMLP!!!

Looks ideal.

However, what I have noticed about the weather in LP over the years is it is very variable on the day and within 10 - 20Km radius. I was there a few weeks ago and we had torrential rain abnd high winds on one part of the bike course and pleasent sunshine on another.

Note to people packing up training and race clothing for next week in LP - TAKE EVERYTHING.

What should be in every triathletes bike kit bag:

  • Knee warmers or leg warmers
  • Booties
  • Arm-warmers
  • Wind vest with full zip
  • Tight fitting long sleeve top with full zip
  • Helmet liner
  • Gloves

great info Fleck, you know the saying for folks in the North East…“you dont like the weather…wait 10 minutes”

I had athletes go to IMWI last year, all with plenty of gear and none of them were caught out in that cold rain. I heard people from out west were scrambling for and making “custom” cold/wet weather gear from wal-mart socks!

MissP was checking her bike in last year at IMWISCO and in the line ahead of her was a guy who looked quite good. MissP asked him if he had all his wet/cold weather gear ready to go. He was from Phoenix and he said he would be fine in what he normally trains in. I saw him out on the bike course riding along with tri shorts and a mesh singlet. His lips where blue and he was barely turning the pedals over going up one of the many hills. He did not look good. MissP took the time to pull on her wet and cold weather gear in T1 and had the 3rd fastest bike split and 2nd fastest run split amongst the women. That extra minute or two putting on the extra stuff at T1 was well worth it!

Hey Steve, here is a story like that to illustrate how silly people can be when it comes to local conditions. Many years ago in IMC ('94 or '95) I'm putting my swim/bike gear bag on my rack.I was in the pro field that year and one young pro by the name of Kyle Sage comes up to me and sees that all I've got in my bag is my helmet. He askes me why and I tell him that I'll be wearing all my race gear under my wetsuit so I don't have to change out of the swim.He then goes and changes his race plan and puts his bike gear on and swims in it.Usually that wouldn't be a problem but Kyle is from Florida and the water and air temp on IMC morning is way colder than a normal Florida morning. He swims the house down and gets on the bike way in front and leads all the way down to Richter in his wet clothes getting colder all the time.Dude never warms up and is out of the race by the time he reaches the long, cold descent the other side of Richter.Poor bastard!Moral of the story is,if you are good enough to lead an Ironman don't take any last minute advice from anyone!!

Nick,

In '97 at IMC it was cool and wet. I recall cresting Richter Pass on the bike with a guy from somewhere in the southern US. He was wearing the de riguer kit for the time - speedo and man-bra. However, his lips were blue and he was visibly shaking as we made our way over the top and were about to embark on a 10 minute downhill run at 70 kmh off the pass, he did not look good. I never saw him after that. I was fine as I had short sleeved cycling skin suit and arm warmers on that day and had volunteer rub my legs down with vasoline quickly at T1. It was actually ideal racing conditions that day, as there were many fast times on the day, but you needed to be dressed sensibly for the conditions.
