Possible broken thumb 1st MCP

so i fell while running the other day (maybe a week or more ago?) and i’m starting to think i broke my thumb. it is very sore, 1st MCP is very swollen, 2nd not as much but still swollen and 2nd is stiff and 1st painful on ROM. by the end of the day pain to the wrist. swimming at about 1500 m the wrist starts hurting but using a splint helps a LOT. simple swimming and hitting the water “wrong” hurts thumb.

i’m guessing there is not much they’d do if it were broken other than cast it and i’ve been using a splint (spica i think) all night and after work so i figure that is about good enough.

any reasons i should get an xray and/or cast?

Yes - get evaluated.

Google “gamekeepers thumb” to see why this seemingly innocuous injury isn’t always so …

Yeah, I thought I just had a sprain for a couple of weeks.
Finally saw a doc, then MRI showed complete UCL tear.
Surgery and all that.
Go see a doc.

See an ortho hand specialist for the reasons above. The thumb is critically important to hand function and a neglected ulnar collateral ligament injury (game keepers thumb) can be debilitating.

Hopefully you just have a bone bruise, but you don’t want to chance it.

wow. thanks for that link. i had come across the term in researching and ASSumed it referred to videogamers and ignored it. fascinating wiki. time to put my tri federation medical insurance to work. i’ll make an appointment for monday.
