Position question (1)

Ok, so at the end of the year I started fiddling with my position after calculating that my seat was 2 inches too low

This was the starting point. The bike was very comfortable like this though my performace wasn’t great. I moved the saddle up 2 inches and then forward to get the same distance stem as it felt like I was going to roll off the saddle. The new problem was that my back became very arched (I know it’s arched to begin with) and I had some loss of power. I then moved the handle bars forward but kept the height on the assumption that I added more drop by raising the saddle. The position feels comfortable and power is better than where I started. I have spacers I can remove but I only have a little bit of saddle rail left to slide forward.

Given all this, does this look better, worse, ok?

Here is the current position

I’ll spare you the hassle

I’m fat. I’m down from over 400 pounds. Elvis is on the wall, why not? There is an aero spoke on the bike due to me being fat. I race on Hed 3’s That isn’t an Mdot decall on the bike, it’s an autism speaks decal. The couch and blinds are always in disaray due to the child that prompted the autism speaks decal.

Simple answer: the new position looks better.

Too answer all the other issues (ie. power loss/ increase, back arch, comfort, etc.) you really can’t do any of those justice through a a couple of static pictures. The best solution is too work with a local bike fitter who can assess you as an athlete, take into account your specific limiting factors and biomechanical issues and then work with you on achieving a comofortable, sustainable and powerful position.

Check the fitters section here on slowtwitch to see if there is someone in your area who can help you to dial in the fine tuning of your fit. It is well worth it. Good luck, looks good so far.

Wow. Sensitive much?

I was just wondering why you had a picture of Mr. Rogers on your wall.

Congrats on the weight loss. Relax a bit.

Of those 2, position 2 looks the best.

I’m sure overtime as you workout more and lose more weight, your position will improve.

It’s slowtwitch. I know what to expect. I’m one of the guys ruining the sport.

Thanks, but i’ve been at this weight for years. I just have a bunch of loose skin that looks worse than it is.

Congratulations on your achievements!

Bah. Not at all. The ones “ruining” the sport (If there are any) are the one and done bucket listers.

Position as is right now looks good. Is it comfortable? And can you hold that position for however long your races are?

As you lose more weight (If that is your goal) also work on your lower back and hamstring flexibility. That will help immensely in getting you more aero.

You still haven’t answered why Mr. Rogers is on your wall. I’m not buying that it’s Elvis, that’s a coverup story.

It’s totally the king. My fiance has a thing for all shit that is tacky.

Yeah, it feels good. I just wanted to make sure I’m on track with the seat height and my angles look fine. I’ve only done a couple of 1 hour trainer rides so far but my general rule of thumb is if it’s fine on the trainer it will be great on the road.

As far as bucket listers go, I have no real input. This was my 6th year doing tris and I had a couple of years of jsut running before then. It seems to have gotten much bigger in that time and it also seems the amount people are willing to spend on bikes (average joes) and cutom team wear has grown greatly. That said, if I did my first one and didn’t like it and kept with just running, I would have been fine as well.

I’d worry more about the photography (seriously–can’t you eve get the camera level with your bike??), the lighting, the mess in the background and oh-my-god-that-position before you worry about what people are going to say about your weight.

In all seriousness because of your weight, I think the usual slowtwitch mantras aren’t going to work quite as neatly for you–if you get your back flat, your knees are going to hit your tummy. I would ride whatever position you can hold comfortably until you get down closer to goal weight. At that point it’ll be easier to start dialing in a fast position. Good on you for getting into it, and keep “ruining the sport.” The people who say that could use some more ruination.

Point of order. YOU are the fiance, she is the fiancee.

Stress makes you gain weight. You should really relax.

First off all, due to your current body type, you aren’t going to be able to get into a super aero position. I think at this point, you should just make sure it’s comfortable and pile on the miles. The leaner you get, the lower you’ll be able to go.

By the way, you haven’t cleaned the pile of crap on the couch since your first fitting? By the time you get into a “rappstar” position, we won’t even be able to find you in the pile of clothes.

Brad

That pile of crap is all part of the little guys comfort zone. I can’t break him of certain things.

I doubt ill ever hit the Jordan rapp position and I’m good with that. I’ve got two marathons, 3 poorly done half ironman, a 190 floor stair climb, and a couple of centuries under me. I can generally get into the top 15% on the bike leg for shorter races and middle pack for stand alone running races. I have 3 kids, 1 which is disabled whose mother live over 100 miles away. I’ll never get to kona but I did teach my autistic child to read, tell time, use the self checkout, and survive a trip to six flags when he hates crowds.

Life ain’t all bad.

Love it

Screw the haters

I think the 2nd position looks better, especially if it feels good
