The caption on this photo is: “Once dominant in time trials, Serhiy Honchar could only manage sixth”
Of course sixth in this instance is only 40 seconds difference. I wonder how much of that is his higher position, that funky old Rev-X front wheel, and the frame, rather than his legs?
Using a road bike didn’t seem to pay off for Simoni.
lame ass Rev-x wheels? i have a set that are fast!!! have you ever used them? look at the data not far off of a H3! and the rest. it’s the motor and he’s in his mid 30’s
Karpets looks like he might suffer from the “long-legged but short-torsoed” syndrome. May be hard for him to get a lot of drop. His position doesn’t look that bad here really.
Yeap, I’ve been saying this for two years, the CSC riders all look perfect on their TT bikes. It looks like Basso and Dave Z. are using a new Bell aero helmet. It looks even longer than last years and the one Dave Z wore earlier in the Giro, I love them. Also, How cool does Zabriskie look in his National Champion TT skinsuit!
look at all that seat post. the frame’s too small.
csc did put on a clinic. it’s the most professional team in timed racing today. and that’s because a pro cycling team is not riding time trial equipment and depending on a pro cycling brain trust. they are riding NORTH AMERICAN DEVELOPED TRIATHLON equipment and they are finally set up like NORTH AMERICAN TRIATHLETES who, for going on 20 years, are and have been the world’s leaders in timed racing technology and expertise. congratulations to csc for realizing this, and too bad for the other teams who have yet to figure this out.
what i mean by this is that profile, vision, hed, cervelo, quintana roo, etc., all north american TRIATHLON companies, have been setting the standard in timed racing, and that’s ANY timed racing, whether triathlon or cycling. those teams riding euro bikes and components are just riding inferior stuff, and those directors sportif who don’t understand that fit and equipment expertise comes first from over here are just going to keep losing to CSC and discovery.
Jeez, but Dan, don’t you know that you can’t generate power riding steep? Only those slow triathletes that need to jog afterwards ride like that. All good European DS’s know that.
NOT!
Basso, 2 years ago: world class climber, mediocre TTer (at least, by pro standards).
Basso today: world class climber, world class time trialist. What a wonderful case study! I’m diggin it!
And how long was the TT? For those guys “TT” must stand for Taint Terminator!
I always laugh about the TT lengths in the grand tours. Remember last year in le tour, where they had a “really really long” 50 km TT? Phil Liggett was going on and on about how it was the longest in le tour in many years. I’m thinking, “I just did a 90km TT a few weeks ago, and then I ran a 1/2 marathon!”.

And you probably raced 10 days before and after that too, right?
If they had 180km TT’s in the grand tours…well…I imagine there would be a run-away winner of the GC…or maybe not…I don’t know really, but I’d definitely watch it with much interest. How exciting would the the grand tours be though if somebody put 19 minutes into their nearest rival over a 180km TT through the mountains? That’d kind of ruin it I think.
Also notice that the saddle is about 2 feet above the top tube. I am pretty sure that he is riding a re-badged Pinarello Montello tt bike. If my memory is correct, all sizes have the same head tube length. I bet his saddle/bar drop is like 15 cm.
By the way, do you see any spacers on Zabriskie or Basso’s bikes? 2 bolt vision bars slammed all the way down.

That was my initial reaction as well. Then I looked at the stem. The picture angle makes it difficult to see, but it does not look to be a long one. A bigger frame may have too long of a top tube for him, no? In which case you could still argue that he is on the wrong bike…
