Pool Running?

As you might already now, I'm recovering from two knee surgeries. The problem started in november so it's been a long time since I did any real running and I won't be seeing my doctor for another three weeks when I think he will allow me to start up again. So, two weeks ago I started running in the pool with a flotation belt. It's great! I feel like a runner again! I feel like a geek in the pool, but I don't care. I feel like a runner again. I'm water running 3 times a week for thirty minutes. I'm also using the elliptical trainer twice a week for 20 minutes. I figure my next move will be running on grass, which I'll start the week after next. ( I might as well be ready when the doc cuts me loose!). I see the doc july 5 and I'm entered in a sprint race July 17 (Montauk). I know I'm cutting it close, but I'd like to make a good showing. Has anyone used pool running to recover from an injury? And how much did it help?

Yes, did it religiously for about 3 months… it helped me maintain muscular strength… but, I would suggest that you don’t over estimate what the value of swim running can do relative to normal running. There is something about the bodies need to adapt to impact that running in water simply can not accomodate (…not to mention the higher HR required/experienced during normal running). That being said, water running is definatley a plus… it is just that it has it limitations. And, you should temper your anticipated abilities to run when you compare it to your previous running abilities.

Sweeney,

I train about 90 injured runners a week in the water.

Check some of my past posts on how to. It works wonders!

Thanks Doug, I checked your websight and apparently I’ve been doing it wrong; moving across the pool like I am running. I see that you say to keep the arms and legs stiff, so I must stay in one place. Is that correct. I’ll be at the Nassau County Aquatic Center working on it this afternoon. Do you ever get over there. I know you work out at Asphalt Green, which is nice, but Nassau County pool is the most amazing pool I’ve ever been swam in.

Sweeney,

Your arms are bend at the elbow as you would when running on land. Do keep you hands slightly lower than your elbows. Make no attempt to bend your knee but do not keep it stiff either. Our legs sweep forward and back instead of lifting your knees.

If you ever get a chance come toone of my classes just to check your form. My website is www.dougstern.com.
