Pool Problem

Since we fired up the pool this year, our heater has been acting up. It seems to be “chugging” or clicking on and off. I thought it may have been starving for water so I replaced the noisy old pump with a nice, new one. Lots more flow, but no luck. I talked to a guy who said it could be time to replace the sand in the filter. Seemed like a cheap option, so $25 (and a sore back) later, I’ve got new sand in the filter. Fire it up and fail. Pool is crystal clear, but the heater is still chugging/clicking.

I called a pool guy who said he can come out early next week, but I’d like to make sure I’ve covered all the options before he comes in and nails me for a hundred bucks (or more if the heater’s messed up).

Any suggestions or experience with a similar situation?

Brad

I may have just had a similar problem with mine. My heater would at times click on and off VERY rapidly for a while then stop. I really didn’t know what was going on, and didn’t have time to mess with it. Once the heater finally stopped working, I found the contactor was broken - the plastic piece that moves down to complete the circuit was busted. I replaced the contactor and it’s working again.

As far as what caused it, I’m still wondering… I don’t know if it could be slightly under-powered, or if the contactor was just getting old, or if there wasn’t quite enough water flow, thermostat not operating correctly, or what.

Not sure if that helps at all, but that’s what I found with mine. Good Luck!

No.
But I we do not have this problem with our solar blanket.
When we moved in, we disconnected the heater!

Fred.

You need some tethers.

Won’t fix the pool problem but you can get in some nice swim workouts. (How hot is the pool?)

I’ve got a tether. Do you have any good tether workouts?

(the pool is normally around 85 degrees. Skinny guy hates the cold…)

switch intervals to time - ie, 6-10 min warmup, 5 x or 4 x or pyramids of 1:00, 2 min, 3 min, back down with :30 easy between
.

the nice part about workouts like that is that you don’t get any rest or flip turns, good OW practice.
