I am in the process of getting ready for IM Brazil but I have to travel to Wiesbaden Germany next week. I know there are a lot of mineral baths in the area but does anyone know if there is a pool you can train in?
I found two indoor pools among the countless wellness facilities. in germany the war swimmer vs. retired people is usually won by the retireds so if possible i would always call in advance to inquire about lanes. don’t just go there at 5.30am - those people never sleep …
Frei- und Hallenbad Kleinfeldchen
Hollerbornstraße 9,
65191 Wiesbaden

Hallenbad Kostheim
Waldhofstraße 11,
55246 Mainz-Kostheim

I’m not sure about Wiesbaden, but I’m just up the road in Darmstadt and there is no such thing as lap or lane swimming. So, be ready for a crowded ‘open swim’ practice.
Also, of the two pools mentioned, they do not open until 7:00 and Kostheim is closed on Mondays, while Kleinfeldchen is closed on Wednesdays.
They both are rather small pools -both 25 meters. Kostheim has only 5 lanes while Kleinfeldchen has 6. So, you will be battling the aqua joggers, slow seniors, kids, and all else. They both cost €3 to enter.
I think I would choose Kleinfeldchen only because it has one more lane. Do NOT go early morning(Seniors are like ants at a picnic), lunchtime (to many fitness swimmers), or after 4:00 (to many kids and families) – if you can. Try betwenn 10:00-12:00 or 1:30-3:30. That should be the least crowded times.
Have fun and think ‘first 400 meters of the start of an Ironman training.’
