Well do OWS in the dam on the weekends and do what you can in the backyard pool. Maybe this will even be relatively more efficient in terms of time spent commuting to and from the pool + changing and so on.
if it were me, I’d try to swim every day in August and September while hitting the bike hard, and now until the pool opens build BIG run fitness, because as you get closer to Kona it gets hard to keep up a big bike AND run volume.
or, you could always commit 1 day a week to driving x hours to a real pool and then swimming 2x (or more!) over the weekend in the OW. Why not swim in open water during the week?
Yeah, that seems to one of the better options eric.
But I dont want to lose any more time in my weakest leg…
As soon as the pool opens I will be there every day! Maybe even 2x per day if I can find the time without compromising bike/run.
I wish I could drive to a pool during the week but the nearest is 2 hours away and work just gets in the way!
Im going to try to get out in the dam each week but its just not a great option being muddy, cold and fairly small. At least I will be the only idiot out there!
I’m going to try and punch out massive bike/run volume in the coming months, if I lose a 5 mins on the swim hopefully I will gain 20 in the bike/run!

I wouldn’t care if the dam were small, muddy and cold. Chuck on a wetsuit and eat a bag of cement. You’ll get some added strength in the shoulders by swimming with a wetsuit on and swimming will feel effortless when you take the wetsuit of when it’s to warm. I would be swimming in the dam as much as I could. We have lake around the corner from my home which is about 1.1 km wide and 2.5km long. It’s definitely an advantage when you can swim in there during the day with no speed boats with skiers trying to hit you.
Good call Alex - going to buy a large bag of cement now!
