Pool cholrine Levels and Health Risks

Does anyone know the acceptable pool cholrine levels and what damage it can do if the levels are too high. We have a problem with the local pool and with several kids (ages 7-16) swimming as much as 6 times a week I was wondering if there could be some health risks involved.

Thanks.

Not sure about the effects of out of wack pH, out of wack cholrine doesn’t do much but fry hair, suits, and give you really dry skin.

Off the top of my head from my days as a life guard.

Typical ph level - ~ 7.2 to 7.5

CHL - varies but 1.5 - 2.5, depending on water tempeture and sunlight exposure in the pool area. In general high tempeture/more direct sun requires more cholorine.

What level is the pool at?

Sorry, I meant to say level of cholrine. It has been around 7 to 10.

And the pool is indoors.

Do a search online about health effects of chlorine and THMs (formed when chlorine reacts with organics in the water) - ain’t pretty. My experience is mostly in drinking water and not pools, but the studies out these days seem to say that breathing it in and absorbing it through the skin is worse than drinking it (lungs, skin exposure, etc.). As much as I hate being in swimming pools (give me a clean lake ANY day), it’s really the only option for most people. But hey, the risks of biking to the pool are probably the worst of all!

Kids (myself included) have been spending 6-7 days a week in pools for years and years without any real problems. I can’t image how much total time D1 swimmers have spent in the pool in their lifetimes.

too much chlorine can lead to yeast infections, the ph can kill some of the good bacteria.
