New poll up. First round is brand-specific. Pick the helmet that you want most for triathlon racing. Next poll, once we get hopefully close to 1000 votes or so, will be on traditional road helmet vs. aero helmet. Thanks.
Is there a place to view prior poll results? I looked around and could not find it. Non-forum search gives 0 matches and a forum search of “poll” has 372 pages of results.
Not yet. It’s in the works…
Results are up and I’m surprised to see Louis G leading the pack. Are people voting for what they already have? It seems that the Giro Advantage II was the hottest thing out there until we got our hands on them to try them out. I for one had serious helmet envy for it until I tried one this weekend and then saw the pictures in Tom’s survey. I’ve had the LG Prologue since it came out (hey, I need all the help I can get!) and now I think I’ll keep riding my prologue for the rest of the year and upgrade to an LG Rocket this winter.
Wow. What a terribly worded survey question. To my reading, you aren’t even asking for the same information in the survey as you claim interest in in this thread.
“What helmet am I most interested in?” Do you mean for my next helmet, or what am I using now, or what do I like to look at, or that I find interesting because it’s a total piece of crap yet people still buy it - what, exactly are you trying to figure out?
You get the picture. Yuck.
.
Your polls don’t like me…this is the second poll I’ve attempted to vote in and got the “Error” message that “you’ve already voted once”.
Ahh, well, perhaps we can get H2OFun on the case and have this solved…ummm, nevermind…
" I think a lot of people are confused by the wording of the question."
i think that the people who just like one helmet over the others should answer the poll. those who’re finding that only an essay answer can suffice should provide it here. but limit it to 500 words.
“Geez, sorry to touch a nerve.”
you didn’t touch a nerve. but i think you’re close to your 500 words on the subject
you’re just deciding on your helmet here, not your religion.
“I am guessing you don’t have any polling/survey design experience?”
take it easy there cowboy. this is not a survey. this is asking you a multiple choice question that must be squozen and smushed into 120 pixels x 400 or so pixels, and changed twice a week. if your special skillset is swim/bike/run/survey design, then volunteer your services to jordan and we’ll have upped our level of proficiency around here.
HAHA…geez, we really need different font colors around here to avoid people taking things the wrong way.
Anytime I have brought up something about the survey/poll, changes to the forum etc., I always just try to phrase it as constructive criticism, hell, you could let this place run to the ground, as long as we could still post and read posts, that’s all I care about ![]()
That said, all the extra stuff going on around here lately is cool, helpful and informative. I took some courses in polling and work on a fairly large survey. I wasn’t trying to come across as a “cowboy” or a know-it-all of any sort, like I said, just trying to be helpful, it seemed like I wasn’t the only one confused.
Sorry for that…I guess.
“I took some courses in polling and work on a fairly large survey.”
sounds like you da man! thanks for volunteering. jordan, put the new recruit to work!
If you want the Bell Meteor, then vote Bell. If enough people vote for Bell, then Dan could say to Bell, “a lot of people want your helmet. Get that damn thing certified.” But, of course, by the same token, if nobody votes for Bell, then we could say to Bell “nobody wants your aero helmet, you better get in the game with something people want.” Same with the Specialized, which is CPSC certified, but impossible to buy. So, based on that, what is the question (and answers) we should be asking (and offering). Remember, there can be more than one poll. But not too many more.
The companies whose aero helmets are “unobtanium,” of which there are only two - Bell & Specialized listed among the choices (there are others, like Uvex, but I think they are quite a small percentage) - do put their potential clients in a rough spot. So, I am not sure there is a best way to tell them that. Is it better to say that people want them to bring the helmets to market in force? Or is it better to say that nobody wants their helmets (presumably because they can’t buy them).
I think if you had just specialized “aero helmets” it would have eliminated the confusion as opposed to “helmet for triathlon racing.”
Some people have no interest in an aero helmet, so they might be voting for Bell because they love their Sweep R and falsely showing interest in the Meteor via your poll. Where as if you said “aero helmet” one of the choices coule be “I prefer a standard helmet” and thus, any info Dan would bring to Bell about interest in the Meteor would be more accurate. That’s all I was saying.
BUT, we want to know if people have no interest in an aero helmet, too. So the question really is not just aero helmets. It’s race helmets, whether that is aero or road.
Geez…I give up.
You said this: If you want the Bell Meteor, then vote Bell. If enough people vote for Bell, then Dan could say to Bell, “a lot of people want your helmet. Get that damn thing certified.”
How could Dan go to Bell and say that when you don’t even know what Bell helmet they are voting for?
Because the next poll we are doing is aero vs. road. You are the pollster, what should I be asking?
HAHA.
So how were you going to word the next poll? Would you just say aero vs. road? Or Belll Aero vs. Bell Road, Giro Aero vs. Giro Road, etc.?
If the next poll was just aero vs. road I don’t see how the information from either would be too useful other than to be able to maybe say “56% of triathletes surveyed prefered an aero helmet for racing.”
Or maybe you are secretly tracking all of our computers? You know I voted for Bell? Then when I vote for aero you will know I am in fact interested in the Meteor? If you are conducting this poll with help from the NSA then it is above my pay grade and I will defer to you ![]()
I wanted to do “Bell aero/Bell road/Giro aero/Giro road/etc.,” but that was too big a poll. I also pondered two related polls, as you described, but I didn’t have the time to do it yet.
Anyway, you are the pollster. Come up with the right wording dammit. I am asking nicely here! ![]()
Ok, 2 polls.
First poll, “Which aero helmet are you interested in for triathlon racing?” List the options, including Bell and Specialized. The last option should be “I prefer a traditional helmet.”
Second poll, “If you prefer a traditional road helmet for tri racing, what brand?”
Now, assuming a roughly consistent voting population on ST, the total number of votes in poll 2 should be close to the number of people who selected the last option from poll 1.
Poll 1 should give you a good picture of the aero helmet market (including interest in helmets that are currently unavailable). Industry people like Dan could hopefully use this data to show Bell/Specialized that there is demand for their helmet. Let’s say 20% of people say Bell. Dan could go to Bell and say “Look, 20% of people that voted are interested in your helmet and haven’t even seen it in person yet.” Look at what happened with the Advantage II, tons of interest from people before they ever even saw it, I raced last weekend and that helmet was everywhere.
Poll 2 should give you a good picture of what traditional road helmets triathletes prefer for racing.
where do we put “I have : Bell/Giro?spuik/LG/etc…”?
LOL
