Team Firefighter is looking for aspiring or current firefighter athletes. Over 50% of on duty deaths for firefighters is due to heart attacks and we want to change this statistic. Some of these deaths are due to heart disease and others due to severe dehydration/electrolyte imbalance in conjuction with extreme physical stress during structure fires or other emergencies. We feel that both of these could potentially be prevented with regular fitness programs and knowledge of nutrition, hydration and electrolyte replacement.
Team Firefighter’s goal is to improve the health and safety of Firefighters by supporting personal fitness programs and encouraging participation in competitive sports. We plan to provide a supportive training environment, training programs, discounted fitness products and equipment donations to firehouses.

Doesn’t the IAFF have a wellness iniative? Don’t my union dues support this?
Comraderie, supportive training environment, pride, and healthy competition; that is what racing and joining this team or any team is about. The benefits that go along with it will hopefully impact our current health crisis. Also, will any department programs specifically provide training support for competitive sports, or generic programs based around testing and data collection. How about equipment donation, discounted products etc etc.?
This is not an administrative health program, this is hopefully a fun competitive environment that creates lifestyle change and a positive attitude towards fitness, which often doesn’t happen with the former. Not to mention some career dept’s are not IAFF and volunteers are clearly not. Again, we are a not for profit and sports team looking for firefighters who want to show their colors and pride on the race course and hopefully have a positive impact on their health, maybe influence brother or sister firefighters and raise awareness.
