Placid report

A later report for IMLP (my first), so I’ll keep it brief.

I was able to get a slot through Race 4 Kids (thanks coach Pady!). I was able to talk the wife into a new bike to equal the challange, and she begrudingly agreed.

Took easy on the swin, trying to stay out of the boxing match. First lap in 37, back in the water into an unexpexted boxing match for the next 400m. Out to t2 at 1:15. Great, I had planned on a 1:20 swim.

AH, the bike. On the advice of numerous friends with experience here, I took it really easy going up out of town. Enjoyed the hell out of the descent to Keene (I’m just under 200lbs and enjoy the thrill of speed). Easy out to Jay and the out and back. First lap in 3 hours (right on plan). Then hello Murphy! while @ special needs, the top of my bike bottle came off and dumped concentrated Perpetum all over my bike. F$$% ME!. Get it back together, and head out. Stop off at the next aid station, grab a couple of bottles of water, and spend a few minutes cleaning my bike. Get back into a rhythm, and enjoy the descent again. 50 mph, NICE! finish lap two feeling good and on target heat rate for a bike of 620, not bad considering i also stopped for the port o let and a dropped chain late in the lap.

The run. I know it’s coming. Out of the gate feeling great, crowds are pumping me up. Made it to mile 8 when I over heated due to me sucking in hot weather. Managed to 50:50 run/jog until mile 22 when my legs said enough. I thought about pushing it, but realized that Timberman was in 28 days, and decided to enjoy the day. Made my goal of 13Hrs by 5 minutes.

Over all a great day. Saw a lot of my team mates (from Hartford - HEAT) as well as the other Race 4 Kids participants.

An to add fuel to the minimum training time banter on here - since my Training Peaks plan kicked in in late October, I was able to manage an average of 5 hours / week leading up to the race, with a long swim of 3400 yards, long bike of 60 miles, and a long run of 9.3 miles.

Thanks for the honest race report, so many of these guys are or at least act like superstars. I believe many are like you (and I), just average Joe’s tying to stay fit and have some fun.
IMCOZ in Nov, Long bike 60 miles, Long run 10 miles and Swim 3000 yd. I’m still married, still enjoy my kids and have a life. It would be nice to get in around 13 hours but thats only because my 4 year old can’t stay awake to midnight

Damn, great effort! Congrats. Finishing sub 13 with your training volume is, at least to me, pretty darn good!
