I’m headed to Salt Lake City in about a week. Can anybody recommend good areas to run and ride in Salt Lake City? I will have my daughter with me and she will be riding a trailer bike hooked to my mountain bike so hopefully they have some riding trails. Anything in the city or real close by?
Thanks,
Are you specifically looking for trail rides? There aren’t many flat trails that would be easily rideable with a child trailer bike. However, there is one that is just east of downtown (about 5 minutes) that runs along the foothill of the mountains. You go east on 800 South (which turns into Sunnyside Ave) and immediately after you pass the Zoo there will be a dirt parking lot on the left-hand side of the street. Park there and hike up the steep 200 or so meter hill and you’ll see the trail. It goes along the base of the mountains for about 3 or 4 miles. There are a few different trails so you can stay busy for a little while. Not many hills, fairly smooth (for dirt) and it’s impossible to get lost. A lot of people run there, too.
Liberty Park (700 E and 900 S) has a nice running trail. Sugarhouse Park (2100 S and 1500 E) is also very nice for running (and biking around the park’s paved loop). Both are within about 5 minutes of downtown.
Let me know if you’re looking for anything more specific or adventurous.
THough not a dirt trail, you won’t go wrong with City Creek Canyon, which begins in downtown Salt Lake. Get to the intersection of State Street and North Temple, turn east, then take your first turn left (north). Then it’s about 17 miles straight up and back of few, if any cars (mostly maintenance vehicles). Check the schedule though…my recollection is that bikes are only allowed on odd days…but I could be wrong…anyone know?
Dirt or paved is ok just not to steep, the young’un won’t be able to assist much on the climbs. I found a place called Jordan River Parkway, do you know anything about that? Is Liberty Park close to the university hospital? MSN Maps is showing E 700 S and S 900 E intersecting close to the university.
Thanks.
I was also going to mention the Parkway - it’ll be a great place to ride…very flat and quite pretty. Just go slow on Saturday mornings…it gets kinda crowded if the weather is nice.
Jordan Parkway is a bit south, but another good idea. Very flat, paved and scenic.
Liberty Park is very close to the University hospital (< 5 minutes by car or bike). The Shoreline trail actually runs right behind the hospital, which is basically on the U of U campus.
As Dave pointed out, City Creek Canyon is also another great place and it’s very close to the U of U. You can ride along the road (one-way with an entire lane dedicated to non-motorized vehicles) that goes to the mouth of the canyon without actually going up the canyon.
Great! Thanks for the help.
If your in for an adventure (and about a 45 minute drive) their is a paved trail up Provo canyon that I have taken my boy in a burly up a few times, the canyon trail is only 4-5 miles but connects to a flat innner city trail that I have only gone about another 5 miles to make a 20 miler but I hear it goes on forever. The neat thing abou the Provo canyon trail is goes past a great falls (bridal veil falls) and ends at a park where a train stops every couple of hours, their is playground equipment so we get out and play and then get back on the trail for the screaming ride down the canyon! We have 30 miles of dirt rail trail up here in Park City but I’m guessing its going to pretty muddy with all of the rain we have in the forecast. If its dry its a great place to pull a burly, though as my boy would say, “daddy, that was bumpy!” I haven’t ridden city creek canyon but it doesn’t look too steep for towing someone up and it is really close to U of U. Welcome!
