I will be going to DC on business for a week in early March, Wed to Wed (so I get a weekend and I don’t have to work on the weekend). Any ideas on good places to eat or get a drink? I am a single guy in my early 30s.
Anything a must see. I have been to most of the sights years ago, was planning on maybe trying to hit two things, tenatively the National Gallery of Art and the Natural History Museum. Any other ideas?
I loved the Spy Museum and thought the Gordon Biersch across the street was pretty good. The Cosi chain has a decent breakfast sandwich option as well (note … this was several years ago, so please take the advice with a grain of salt!).
I spent an entire day walking around and checking out the free monuments. The Vietnam Memorial is absolutely worth a visit (or repeat visit).
Holocaust Museum is worth checking out. They just finished a renovation on the American History museum as well.
As for places to eat/drink. Capitol Hill has some cool bars going down Pennsylvania Ave. and then near the Eastern Market area is 8th Street which has some good bars and restaurants, my favorite of which is The Ugly Mug, great sports bar with a very good food menu (the best mini-burgers in the world, plus good nachos, pizza, etc.)
There are also places to eat/drink in the “downtown” area near the Metro Center/Dupont Cirlce stops, also could go up towards Georgetown, some good places there as well. Also the Adams Morgan area is a strip of bars, a bit more “college” atmosphere, but fun.
The Capitol City Brewing Company, located in the old post office building near Union Station isn’t bad. Decent burgers, decent beers, but always crowded. Grab a seat at the bar and enjoy.
Generally speaking, DC isn’t a real “foodie” town. I lived in the area for about 3 years and never found a place that I couldn’t do without. As far as sights - I’d do a night tour by bus so that you can see everything, and then go back and spend time at the places that interest/intrigued you the most.
If you like beer, you HAVE to go to the Brickskellar. http://www.lovethebeer.com/brickskeller.html
Thanks for the hookup. They have Shiner Bock, so I am definitely hitting this place up for a few drafts.
Someone once recommended that I visit Arlington National Cemetery (temporarily of course). I was skeptical that I would find a cemetery interesting but I really enjoyed it. A lot of interesting historical stuff.
