They obviously see a distiniction between a ‘threat of deadly force’ and actual ‘deadly force’.
That is a pretty hazy distinction then. Someone approaches me with a gun, I have to assume they have the intention of using it. That is what a gun is for after all.

Yeah, the pirates just aren’t used to people actually opening fire, until recently. It seems like they expected it to continue to be a gentlemanly exchange of hostages for money with the guns being all for show.
That’s over now.
I worry about the 200 or so hostages still out there.

Given these Somali Pirates have a pretty good track record of killing civillian sailors on vessels they have attacked and also killing those they have kidnaped, what’s this obvious distinction you point to?
I’m just reading the same stuff as everyone else but from what I’ve read, the actual number of hostages that have been killed compared to the total number of ships/hostages taken is supposedly very low.

Would you not agree that anything > 1 is unacceptable?

Here’s the good news … after this, these pirates will make sure the statistics will be higher in favor of killing ratio as to ships taken.

The pirates and hostage taking have been going on for years but the media have finally shown some interest only after an American was captured so now you will not hear the end of it. Obama will speak about it and it will be front page news, at least until the next thing.
