I think the picture is a good wake-up call for people. I’d rather be grossed out a little bit by a picture (which would motivate me to get my bike tuned-up) than have a crash in an IM. It’s only a little road rash.
Did anyone see the picture on the Bikesport wesbite next to the article, “Prevent Bike Problems at Ironman Wisconsin”? It is kind of gross…
Also, I don’t like that it suggests that it is okay for anyone to wear that sort of outfit for a triathlon.
Tom - how about a new picture?
Regards,
Matt
Darn, he must have changed it, I went there and didn’t see anything even close to gross, just a guy riding his bike without a shirt on and a redspot on his leg.
So what was the gross picture like, and what was the inappropriate clothing the guy was wereing? A cotton-shirt with cut-offs?
Yup, it is kind of gross. That was the point: Fix your bike before a technical problem contributes to a fall that may result in injury.
In journalism, this is called a “hook”- a sensational image or attention getting headline to pull someone in and attract attention to the story. If it bleeds, it leads…
As for the person’s choice of racing attire- well, that is a matter of personal choice. I shot that photo at the Bikesport Ann Arbor Triathlon about three years ago.
