Here are a few pics of the new hed s extensions I got with new Vision base bars.

Nice set up!

How much did you pay for the extensions only?

Where at?

Thanks,

I have a similiar set up on my P2K but kept the VT clip-ons with the VT base bar. I thought about doing the same as you have but had a hard time justifying an extra hundred bucks for the Hed S clips over the standard shaped VT clips. I dont really understand what would be involved in manufacturing costs to justify such a large price difference of the Hed S clips over the conventional ones made by VT, Profile, Syntace, etc.

But they certainly do look really cool.

The extra 100 bucks is the " lance used it factor".

Just like Giro profits on the gold helmets, the Lone Star helmet, etc…

Lance uses something the next day it’s retail value doubles.

Or maybe I’m just jealous.

I know S bars are all the rage. Can someone tell me why these would be comfortable? What is wrong with the simple upturn at the end? These things look like wrist torture sessions to me. What am I missing?

Does that bike have enough spacers?

it’s not about comfort - it’s about power and variability (and it’s only 10 bucks if you take a mountainbike handlebar btw …)
when greg leMond first used aerobars his initial statement was: “great leverage!”
you (or at least I) have 3 options:

  • “grab it short”, butt moves back on the saddle - perfect climbing jan-ulrich-style up to 5-6%, especially for longer climbs!

  • “grab it on the curve”, butt moves far forward - power postion. it’s hard to describe - just try it and you’ll know what i mean

  • “grab it veeery long”, butt goes wherever it likes. modified “superman-position” depending on the overall length of the extensions, very aerodynamik and something you definitely can’t do with conventional extensions!

i’m still playing around with different settings. carbon x upper postion, lower position, with or without lowerage of the armpads. my feeling at the moment (after some short rides and a century) is that the best position is, when the “upper” part of the s bends are about one inch lower than your arm pads.

litespeed’s herbert made me some titanium extensions that are a little “higher” (more bend with a longer curving zone) and shorter. unfortunately i can’t really test them bc of weather issues in beautiful western ny, but i expect them to be great!

once i figured out how i can add pictures - i will do that

Thanks That Guy.

Felipe, I ordered them from Hed.

Thanks, Cerveloguy. The extensions are the lightest I have ever handeld. They feel weightless.

Hi Aj, I think personal perception is subjective. I’ve used Carbon X and Stryke, and these by far are the most comfortable. I can change various positions during the ride.

Hi Bootsie, it does, and I’m still extremely low. Big slam positioning this is not.

Hi Sebo, ditto.

Another question for you: on this generation of the HEDs, how far back (aft of the base bar?) can the elbow pads be adjusted to?

Those look pretty sweet and nicely installed. I’m not too sure about your bike though

Looks OK (so sue me if I don’t think things look better just because Lance uses them) but I’m not buying the fact that they are better than a standard aerobar. I have a standard upturn on my bars and I have no problems moving around (which seems to be the biggest claim to fame?).

Marketing is everything.

Never tried them or seen them up close , but I would have to agree with you . An abnormally awkward postion for 180km I would think. Will stick to my prehistoric Carbon x’s till further notice thanks !

Hi Greg, I don’t believe you can adjust the pads backwards. They are attached diretly on the hardware that connects the extension to the basebar.

Hi Berndog, take it easy on the cervelo!

Hi OT, I don’t particularly care that Lance used/uses these, personally. And I would never argue that they are better then standard aerobars, as I mentioned above, I believe it’s personal preference. Let’s not forget that aerobars have gone through plenty of transformations (the original aerobars were modeled after ski-extensions and the positioning of a down hill skier), as well as plenty of marketing for the standard aerobars, too.

Hi Canuck, try this-place your arms out and tuck them in as if you were in the aero position and lightly close your fingers with your thumb on top, does that feel comfortable? For me, it’s quite natural. Also, you can adjust the bars so they’re not completely horizontal as Ulrich used with his bars which makes them very comfortable IMO.

very nice

I’m jealous on a variety of levels

Hi Cevelodude,

Will give it a try . Thanks for advice. Set-up looks great by the way, hope it works well for you.

I wasn’t meaning to criticize your choice…just trying to get to the bottom of why people seem to think they are so cool. The ‘ability to change position’ argument cuts both ways. The position doesn’t look uncomfortable but it doesn’t look like there is any way to relieve stress from the wrist whereas there are many wrist positions with an upturned aerobar. Probably a completely moot point for most people riding a 40k (as is changing saddle position). Leverage can be generated from either setup equally well.

As usual, I just don’t get it. But then again I don’t know what the price is…relative to something equivalent like the Visiontech Carbon clip-ons (which I use and love). If they are cheaper then thats a bonus but I have a hard time imagining that. They might be a few grams lighter (VTs are 290g I think)?

Two suggestions: Work to decrease number of spacers needed and get the wicked VT brake calipers (and no, they won’t cut your hands if you brake hard hehe). Other that that, nice set up!

Wow, at first glance that looks really uncomfortable at the ends of the aerobars. I didn’t think they turned “down” at the shifters like that. I think I’ll stick to my VT clipons. I turn them a tad down past parallel (sp?) so the ends are more horizonal.

I’m curious CD, how much seatpost do you have sticking out of your frame???
