Pick Apart my Lame non aero Position

OK, guys, here is a link to some bike pics of me from the Peterborough half Ironman. Unfortunately, no side view aero shots but even in these sitting up shots as I start the bike out of T1 you can see my position is not really that aero.

For the life of me, whenever I get any lower, I can’t run off the bike. This position is around 79 degrees with one 5 mm spacer.

The good thing about this position is that I could spend 95% of the ride in the aero position, pretty well up all the hills. In the end my bike split was 10th overall, including 5 pros (2:28). I am not sure that I would bike much quicker by getting lower as I would have to sit up more often and get out of the bars. In the end, my aggregate drag, integrated over the entire bike course might actually be worse with a good aero position. Has anyone done any studies on this ?

I have to admit, I look somewhat ridiculous on this 51 cm Soloist with the seat shoved that far forward

For good measure here is a run finish line pic of me doing my best Macca imitation (at least my run technique is good…speed is another story):

Anyone who goes 2:30ish on the bike and 1:33 on the run shouldn’t worry too much about their bike position.

On the other hand, how much faster could you have gone with a more aero position 2:25? How far does that move you up the standings?

K. Gingras is a stud isn’t he. I get to see him race all the time down here in Columbus, usually coming in off the run as I am heading out…

All kidding aside, I have very long arms for my height so the sitting up position looks twice as bad due to the fact that I am not resting on the elbows (half the arm length).

After LP, I will try and get properly fitted and see if I can get in a position that is a bit more aero that I can hold on all but the steepest climbs. This bike also needs a slightly longer stem to get my nose of saddle to centre of base bar distance back to 48 cm that I had on my previous bike (currently at 46 cm), but for the moment, I’d rather be tight in front end then laid out. Remember that only Dave Scott DNF at Kona…it was when he got a longer stem and then put lots of stress on lower back and hamstrings and glutes.

Yeah that Gingras dude was on fire !

Zipp and Hed on the same bike! That’s a no-no! + 5 minutes.

But, your helmet and shoes match so it’s almost a wash! -4.9 minutes.
