Pic of 808 with wheelcover

Several months ago someone posted a pic of their bike with an 82mm Zipp rear with a CH Wheelcover. I’ve looked but can’t find it.

Can the owner repost that pic or link?

Thanks.

That would be about the biggest waste of time ever - putting a wheelcover on an 808? Why?

Err…because it’s faster in crosswinds?

The pic was from Marky V – “austri” – I’ve got the same setup and it is measurably faster on windy days.

I recall it was an elite or pro and disks aren’t legal at IMHI. that’s my guess.

I got my 808 with a Powertap hub. Add the wheelcover and it’s one very slick setup. A heck of a lot cheaper than an SRM with a Zipp disc! Rich at Wheelbuilder.com will cut the cover to fit the 808 wheel, with whatever hub you have. It mounts quite easily, and I put black plastic tape all the way around the edge to make a perfect seal with the rim.

(this pic is Mark’s bike, not mine)

Naturally, a lot goes into a given bike split at a given power. But, at least I know this didn’t slow me down – I went 2:40:02 at Oceanside on only 189 average watts.

wanted to show a friend who is looking at wheels right now and is torn between a the 808, a disk and a H3. I recommended the 808 for the exact reason, the powertap, that you mentioned.

thanks for the reply.

How do you fill er up with air before the race? What happens if you flat?

Ergomo is the way to go. Can use it with any wheelset, and it’s not much more than a PT.

With a bike pump or CO2 cartridge. The cover has a valve access cutout.

Ergomo is interesting especially because of $ and added benefit of elevation.

One advantage of the PT I see is portability between bikes. i.e. using the same rear wheel on road bike and tri bike. any drawbacks to this?

I put an extra wiring kit on my road bike and just share the wheel and computer unit.

Yeah, I’d say that’s the big benefit of the PT over the ergomo. For me, I basically never ride anything but my tri bike outside (Have the road bike almost permanently attached to the CT), so it’s not really an issue.

But I still think that the ergomo wins due to the wheel issue. Even if you go with something like the 404/disc cover set-up (a very good option in my opinion), you still need TWO PT hubs, unless you are planning on doing all of your training on your race wheels. That puts the cost into the SRM realm, and makes the ergomo look better and better.

That looks sharp. I have 808’s and don’t have a disc… Might look into it.

Might be a waste of time but the pic looks sweet.

Yup - they sure do! Most definitely qualifies as bike porn.

Perhaps wheelbuilders will make a lenticular shaped cover to fasten over a flat disk like a Renn? That would be cool ;o
