Photo Story: Sunday Steel Mill Ride

Tom,

Great pictures and it looked like a nice ride. I went on a bit of an Epic mountain bike ride on Saturday. Covered about 40K of pretty rugged terrain in about three hours. Wished that I had a camera along, because it was absolutely beautiful in my parts( Muskoka - 2 hours north of Toronto) with the fall colours at their peak. The ride was mostly on snow-mobile trails.

Keep the ride reports coming with pics. . . I don’t know about anyone else, but I enjoy reading these.

Thanks!

Tom

If you knew some of the stuff that goes into the air at steel mills you probably wouldn’t ride there.

I used to work for a company that was a supplier of valves to steel mills (including Zug Island). On several occasions while I was on site visits I was told that the workers at the mill are, or at least used to be, encouraged to smoke because it would CLEAN THE AIR going to their lungs. The final straw for me was when I was up on the top of a flare stack supervising the installation of a new butterfly valve; one of the guys installing it says to me “see that pipe over there (points at a 48” diameter or so pipe, spewing gas)…that’s pure carbon monoxide coming out of that". He seemed to be quite proud of it too. I quit that job pretty soon after that. Ironically, I’m now designing products used in the treatment of asthma and other lung dissorders.
