I will be in phoenix this week-end and was wondering about a master’s practice… I search the web and found a group at ASU… anyone swim there? Also, any group runs? Thanks
Not regularly, but I have dropped in and it’s a good group. I always enjoy it. They also have tri specific workouts 3x a week.
Runs? Can’t help you, although I know that one of the Master’s coaches, Chris Aikman, runs a tri training group that undoubtably has some. He’s a good guy.
G
The masters practice is good. You can go to either the 9am(more for swimmers) or the 10:30am(more for triathletes).
For runs, your can try Scottsdale Running Company.

Hey thanks… What do you mean “more for swimmers”… I am an ex swimmer that is now a triathlete:) I will check into the running part. I am still looking to buy a place there and will be looking into tempe and scottsdale… any others recommendations on neighboorhoods? i know I asked before but figured I’d get an update…
Saturday morning at 8AM at Tempe Town Lake (south side across the street from the stadium) there is a Splash and Dash: run 1K, swim 500, run 4k. The race is part of a series that is well run. The venue is excellent nd the lake is still warm. The entry price on the day of the race is $25…
I forgot about the splash n dash (www.redrocktriathlon.com). You can even do it and still make it to the swim practice.
The 9am practice is usually attended by the regular masters swimmers. There are many ability levels, but the top is end is ex-D1 swimmers. The 10:30am is not nearly as high as far as general ability level goes, and nearly everyone is a triathlete. If you are a good swimmer(for example you can do 100’s on a 1:30 interval SCY) then you would get a better workout from the 9am. The 9am usually does from 4000 - 5000 yds in 1.5 hours. The 10:30 will be about 3000 yds in 1.5 hours. Also, the 9am usually has about 30 swimmers, while the 10:30 has about 15. Its an 8 lane scy pool
The pool is at the Student Rec Center located on Apache about 1/4 mile west of Rural and east of the parking structure. There is a traffic light, but I can’t remember the name of the street. The entrance is on the North side of the complex. On Saturday I believe you can park in the Structure for free.

Thank you so much… I think the tri group would work best since I want to do a long run before end… Plus I haven’t swam 4-5K yeards in years!!! I won’t do the triathlon, I am not in racing shape for that. But I am looking forward to this nice weather!
Be aware…it’s supposed to chill down to under 90 degrees this Sunday. Might want to bring your Goretex stuff.
Dave “if it ain’t 100, it’s cold”
Before the splash & dash there is a group ride too. I think they’re doing the Ironman AZ course, or at least one lap of it.
Hey Ed:
When do you swim with the Masters? You’ve probably seen me but then again, if you’re not at the slow end you’d never see me, lol.
I usually swim t-th 6am-7am and with the tri group on Saturday. Usually the only woman of color there…at least in the am swims.
I haven’t been to the morning practice in a long time. I usually swim the 9am on Saturday. Now you’ve got me racking my brain trying to think of who you are.
I also coach for SDM. M,W,Th 6pm-7pm.
Does your first name start with an “R”?
Ed
Yes, my first name starts with R… you know me and I know you!! You just never know who you’ll run into on these forums. I’m the really slow but determined woman who Chris A taught how to swim! He needs to teach me another stroke…
I’d love to come after work, but I’m usually exhausted and sometimes it’s hard to get out of here to get to the pool by 6. I’m sure I’ll be seeing you around.
