Phoenix-MTB or Tri Bike

Long time poser, first time poster.

A little help here, please. I’ll be in Phoenix for a couple of months on business. I’m planning on Fed-Exing a bike to myself when I get there and am torn between the MTB and the Tri bike ( don’t own a road bike).

My season has been over for a month or so and won’t kick off again until April for the Big Sur marathon then tris in May- September. Is the mountain biking out that way pretty decent for an intermediate rider? Is there easy access? I can’t get too far lost, as I will be in a sort of on-call status while I’m there. I had my tri bike out there for 6 weeks in May-June this year and enjoyed riding up and around South Mt. and out at Tortilla “Flats”. So, I know that I enjoyed having it out there. I’m thinking of mixing it up this time with the MTB since there aren’t any races in the near future as oppesed to the last time I was there.

By the way, I did Rio Salado while I was there last time and it was very well put on and I would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for any input you can offer.

Bring the MTB… thats the only bike that you can ride anywhere(road, dirt, etc…). Then when you come back home to the tri-bike, you’ll be flyin on that thing!!!

great mtn biking for any level here unless you are one of those north shore maniacs that likes to ride fallen trees over ravines- we’re a bit short of trees here - although plenty of ravines.

you can always buy a set of semi-slicks also and ride a lot of the desert stuff with out the knobbies- and then do some road rides also.

I would go with a MTB if I had to have one bike. I lived in Tempe/Phoenix for 2 years and I never got tired of doing any of the trails. South Mtn was my favorite spot for ease of access, and I also did some killer trail runs out there too.
