Philly Tri--roll call

Who’s in? and what are your expectations. I don’t expect the swim to happen, that way I’ll be “pleasantly” surprised when it does go off. I also expect a packed bike course…

I’m in, starting with the 20-24 y.o. males. If rain doesn’t come for another week, the swim should go off, but we probably won’t know until the morning of. I get the sense that the second bike loop will be absolutely nutty with 1400 people spread out over 12 km.

As I mentioned last week - I’m body marking and bike marshalling. I’m bringing my camera. NO way I was going to pay that price to join the bike parade.

Current weather forecast - light rain on Saturday.

I’ll be wearing a red cap that says “Costa Rica”

I’ll be there, thankfully in the 1st swim wave (M30-34), so hopefully can avoid some of the bike craziness on the 1st loop, all bets are off on the 2nd loop, but at least the roads are fully closed. Lemon Hill and the descent on Black road are going to be pretty hairy 2nd time around with all of the people on the road. I won’t cry if the swim gets cancelled, but I think it would have to be pretty bad for them to turn it into a du, interesting that there hasn’t been any talk of the back-up plan for rain. I expect a lot of the 1st timer folks would be pretty disappointed with having to run twice.

I’m in. Never got a chance to check out the course. I haven’t a clue about a goal time, given the traffic jam everyone’s predicting. And I think the Schuykill’s getting a bad rap - I feel certain I’ve swam in funkier water - right?

Well, I’ve lived in Philly for most of my life, and it never even occurred to me to go swimming in the Schuykill.

That said, I’m set to try it - not in this one, but the shorter one coming up at the end of July. (By the time I decided I wanted to do a triathlon this summer, the PhillyTri was full).

Good luck to all who do it; i’ll be out there watching.

i’ll be there as part of a relay with a couple of guys from Cadence Cycling in Manayunk. I’ll also be in the Cadence tent at the Expo. Not sure why they asked me to be there, since you guys probably know more about Triathlons than I do. But stop by and say hi.

As for the relay…i’m supposed to do the swim. Are you saying that may not happen now? Nice!

I’ll be there in the M2529 AG. Not as ‘gung ho’ about this race as I was when signing up. Nonetheless, I will race hard. At least I have free housing for the weekend. The water won’t bother me, been in all sorts of nasty stuff (ie the Hudson) and it sound like the bike course will bring new meaning to the phrase “head on a swivel”…

The Other TD

It’ll be my first oly (2nd tri), so yeah I’ll be disappointed if the swim has to be cancelled. But it would take some really heavy rain and (knocking on wood as I type) it doesn’t look like anything is in the forecast so it should go off. The bike course is certain to get crowded in spots and I can only imagine what it will be like around the transition area (bikes in and out and around, runners out and back, finish line, yikes!)

If the swim happens, update your shots! You couldn’t pay me to swim in the Schuykill. but good luck!!

I’ll be joining Matty in the m20-24 group.

I was in Philly for the philly 1/2 marathon last year and the river had overflowed from the previous night’s storm. It looked absolutely disgusting, like someone’s overflowing toilet. It’s downstream so hopefully we’ll all be in and out of the water quickly.

My brother in law used to work for the EPA and says that the schuykill is not nearly as bad as everybody thinks it is. He fishes in it all the time.

I’ll be there spectating and taking pictures. Aside from Olympic being a bad distance for me you won’t find me paying that entry fee for a short race with a packed bike course. I know a few of the race organizers and they are good people who are making every effort to put on a top notch event but 1300+ people on a 12 mile loop (with the huge speed difference between first loopers and second loopers) is going to be dangerous.

For those worried about the water quality the river has been tested using the same standards they use at the NJ shore so if you are willing to swim in the ocean… I’m sure it’s no worse than swimming in the Cooper River in NJ.

Good luck to all those racing, look for the spectator on the nice Titanium Elite

I’ll be there. First-time Oly / 2nd ever tri for me as well. Looking forward to a great race. I’ll be quite disappointed if we don’t swim, as that’s the only event I can claim to do well.
