Phil Maffetone Technique

I’ve posted the same thing on GordoWorld as well.

I’m a 56 year old cyclist wanting to stretch my rides into multiple consecutive double centuries. Someone just told me about Maffetone’s technique of very slow base build up, just at a time when I was thinking that something similar might work for me (I worked at my LT far too much, too early last year). I’m wondering if anyone could give me advice about Maffetone’s system (I’ve ordered his books today). thanks.

Hey,Welcome. Glad you posted here. I am Kenney here not quantumcarbpro. Hey all,I recommended this site to this gntleman who would like some guidance. I am to new to help, but you all here helped me …Can you all help a roadie who can not run. …Mr. tibbs,How can someone come hear and not hear from you!!!Cervelo!!

Kenney,

Thanks so much for “introducing” me!

Ken

Here’s a couple of links that deal with the same topic:

  1. Maffetone method Anyone?

  1. Heart Rate Training: Is It a Hoax?

http://www.slowtwitch.com/cgi-bin/gforum.cgi?post=70161;search_string=search_string;#70161

Both threads deal with Meffetone’s Methods.

The methods in his book work wonderfully. He recommends doing a lot of miles at an intensity that you can back up day in, day out.

Read The Maffetone Method carefully. He does not propose doing only “slow” work. Read again and again until this is clear. This is the most msunderstood element of his program.

180 - age should probably put you somewhere near the top of heart rate zone one. If it doesn’t, be skeptical. You might have a heart rate that is out of range. This formula cannot possibly be correct for everyone.

Test yourself often.

Good luck,
matt

as Matt was saying about HR. The formula works pefect for me running, bit is a little lower on the bike. This may be due to a couple different things. My perceived effort seems a little harder on the bike at the same range as the run.

Thanks to Kenney again for leading me here, and thanks to all the replies. I greatly appreciate your good support and advice!

Bags…Thank you… If you also post in different ways ie… “Is it true older people have a harder time burning fat” or areobic base training? ect… If you stay on these sites you will learn the best way to post to get the answer desired. I am also very interested what you learn from the gordo site, gentleman who said that Phil Maffatone was his coach. I beleve many here would want to hear. Finally, the other site we met on is informative ect…but in a much different way. More about theory and ,how would I say, untried opinions. On these two sites are professional people who really take the knowledge and compete. I guess the difference between knowledge and wisdom. …Glad I could help and hope that even though you can not run you will become part of this community.

Although we are triathletes,it is really about people challenging themselves in lifestlye…I am sure that even though your arthritis keeps you from running, anyone who will do double centuries is welcome here…Kenney

Read this thread and jump in! This really is more of a community!

This is normal. Usually HRs on the bike will be somewhere around 10bpm lower. If you have lactate step testing done on the bike and on the run you will see different lactate threshold heart rates.
