Time trials are fun…slightly off-topic, but does anybody know if there is such thing as a “weekly” time trials in southern Ontario anywhere?

Most clubs have time trials every month. Depending on what club you belong to, you can go to other clubs TT’s. you could likely do one each week. In Waterloo we have them roughly once a month. But you have to belong to our club, or another club I believe.

I know the guys in the north get to have some fun each week I think both of these are on Tuesdays.

There is a weekly time trial series in Midland that has been running for the last 4 years. I think it’s either free, or pretty close to it…a buck a week maybe? I’ve been a few times…you get everything from fast 40kph riders to newbs.

Orillia also has a weekly time trial series that’s been running for a few years. Again, all levels welcome, and the price is right. I haven’t been in a few years, but it was fun.

There are some strong riders in those two areas, and both have a pretty actve tri community…lots if IM racers, especially for the small towns. Anyone know of any other tt races?

Did the Peterborough TT last year. They made me flip my seat on my P2K back to 5cm behind the BB as the IUC rules, so trigeeks be aware of this. Some of those roadies are really fast. Had my *ss handed to me. I’ll pass this year!

In Ottawa we have weekly TT’s. The Ottawa Bicycle Club organises a weekly 15km TT (Temporarily 10km for the next couple of months at a new venue, because the old course is being resurfaced, which is much needed, since it was like TTing on the moon). It’s free if you’re an OBC member, or $30 for the season if you have a racing licence through another OCA club.

We may be sending some guys to Peterborough for the races. Not sure yet though whether or not I’ll go, since one of our key riders for that weekend is on the disabled list after a collision with a car (he’s on the indoor trainer until his vision returns to normal).

The Peterborough Club has 8km, 16.4km and 40km TT’s on a rotating schedule.

I am trying to get the commissaires to lighten up on the UCI rules for folks not in overall contention for Master 1 and Senior 1/2/3.

It is my hope triathletes will give it a go with their normal bike setup. If you have an issue with the commissaire asking you to change your bike ask for me “Scott Murison” the Race Director.

The winning time last year was approx 52:30 minutes for the 39.3km. The bulk are just over an hour.

It was a tough day. It felt weird riding my P2K in the shallow position as I was too stretched out and just not used to riding that way. Can’t remember my time but, I was in the 50+ class. Came 4th in the 50+ if I remember right, but the guy who won the division beat me by 7 or 8 minutes. It was my first ever TT and was a humbling experience.

Both the D’Ornellas and Mid-Week cycling clubs run weekly ITT through the late spring and summer just north of Toronto in the Kennedy Rd Elgin Mills Rd. area.

www.dornellas.com

Further north both the Newmarket Eagles club and the Cyclissimo Cycling Club run a series of ITT’s through the summer months:

www.cyclissimo.ca/club/

Lot’s of reasources there.

Doing a 15K ITT once a week or every other week is perfect training for triathletes. The surprising thing is to see how few triathletes actually get out and take advantage of these outstanding training/racing opportunities.

Thanks guys. I just looked into a few of them, and I came across something very cool. The series in Midland runs every week, but every 2nd week they give you the option to do a brick time trial - they time your bike and a 3k run afterwards. That’s a super cool idea for us tri geeks.

I’m in Barrie, so I might give that one a shot. I’m also going to look into Orillia and Newmarket.

Scott,

That is good of you and I wish you the best of luck. You’ll need it. Don’t forget this is the same friendly group that hands out $20 fines for people racing with no sleeves or the wrong coloured team kit!! And they wonder why not more people road race.

It’s interesting these days going back and forth between tri racing and road racing as I have been doing this year. Bottom line, triathletes don’t know how good they have it and should be grateful for the significant race managment, support and event services that they do get. Triathlon is light years ahead of where bike road racing is these days.

In my experience, it takes a little chat with the Commissaires and they usually understand. This is the 3rd year I have run the event. I have no issue with them holding contenders to the rule of the law (UCI). Last year the fella was pretty lenient with most “participants”. Perhaps “Cervologuy” looked and was a player, and was thus held to the law.

I agree that many Tri’s are well run. I have done many Subaru Series, HSBC Series tri’s and attended World Age Group Olympic events and they have all been superbly run. I take lessons I have learned there and apply them to bike races. Some of these lessons are chip timing, after race food, award ceremonies etc.

I have melded good prize money in as well. This is a lesson I have learned from road racing.

I did this race several years ago and I still remember it as being the best-run TT I’ve ever done.

As a side note, they do adhere to UCI rules and the official did not like my P2K in the forward position! He said I could still race, but I wouldn’t be eligible for awards - no problem.

I did the TT last year and a few things struck me as how different it was from a tri. For a start they only had two or three porta potties for all those people. .

Just a totally different atmosphere. I found most people were friendly enough if you approached them, but there was none of that genuine “let’s help the newbie out” feel that you get at a triathlon. A lot of people were there with cycling clubs or teams and stuck pretty well to themselves. I wouldn’t by any means call it snobby, but perhaps a bit stand-offish, at least compared to triathlons.

I was amazed at how $$$ some of the TT bikes were. There are nice bikes at tris too, but mixed in with everything else, but nobody seemed to be on a clunker, that’s for sure. Neat to see some of the Euro TT frames and components that you normally don’t see at a tri.

Scott,

I have heard great things about your event. Best wishes for this year.

I’ve been wanting to get out to the midweek TT’s run by D’Ornellas and MWC since it would be a 10K warmup (or less) for me to get over there since I live in Markham. My problem is getting home from work downtown in time to get out there. My friend (Hosspro) has told me about them and I’m really wanting to get out and have my butt handed to me by serious roadies. Mayeb one of these days.

I understand the “snobby” comments but sometimes they are overwhelmed by some fun! Here is a picture of PCC’s Scott Wood who did the 40km TT on a 60lb Kronin with 6 pack and bagette in basket. His finish time was 1:12:00 approx!!!

Fleck, the bozos running those TT’s would immediately DQ me…with my seat slammed all the way back, the nose of my saddle is 0.5 cm in front of the BB on my QR Lucero (size small)! Go figure
