I was checking out Peter’s site and this is a new link: http://www.peterreid.com/coaching.htm Nice to see he’s not leaving the sport! I was reading CURRY’s race report on here (5th OA at IMF) and he was saying he was being coached by Peter this year, I was wondering if others could get in on the action! Now I have my answer. Trev
He’s also working with someone down in Seattle who is teaching power cycling.
I can just imagine the insane schedules he’d be spelling out for people…
Boy…i wonder if my money would be a good enough fit for him to take me on!!
I believe Jim Vance 3rd O’all was also coached by Peter. Jims a very good coach in his own right so it’s good to see people of his caliber benefiting from Peters experience.
I think Macca should go with Peter as coach so that he can take out Norman…at the same time, Norman should go with Peter to take out Macca :-).
My prediction is with all the hot air between these two guys, the person that actually listens to Peter (Faris) takes it next year. Faris will hammer the swim, detaching himself from the group and will ride with his nose in the wind till Norman catches his halfway back from Hawi. The two will ride together and then Faris will pull off a 2:49 run. Macca will need to run 2:41 to catch Faris (since the group will lose time to Faris by T2 without having him there to do the work…), but thanks to a coke that Peter hands Faris in the energy lab, the victory is sealed.
Don’t forget that the writerguy challenge will make Pete a part of this race; I know he’s said he’ll be DFL on the mpro side, but I’m guessing the competitive spirit lives on and he’ll come back with a little something special. Wouldn’t that put a wrench into the Staddler/Macca/Faris showdown. My money’s on johnnyo, now that he’s back up in the great white north to train hard…
Oh, and I happened to notice that Pete’s domain name has changed to http://www.PRPeakPerformance.com. I guess the rumours are true. Pete, if you’re looking for a charity case, I’m your guy:) Who wouldn’t love to be coached by one of the best, eh?
I think that one thing that Peter had completely dialed in is the mental aspect of what it takes to race an Ironman well. Everyone from FOP to BOP age grouper is fit on race day. When you get to the line, there is NOTHING you can do to change your preparation. My friend Rick Hellard who is a coach in Otawa talks about training the “whole athlete”. Ricks athletes do exceedingly well on race day, because they are mentally prepared.
I know we had a discussion on ST some time ago on “do you need to do an Ironman to coach and Ironman” and also there was some discussion to this effect in the “flavour of the month” (or whatever it was called) coaching thread. Personally I’d rather have someone guide me through the battlefield who has been in battle himself. If you fall into this category there are not that many more qualified than Peter. I had the pleasure of a number of discussions with him after St. Croix and pre Ironman LP and I can tell you that biggest benefit was in gaining the mental edge.
As such, I can see huge value in going with a guy like Peter. Now, it appears that you can’t just go sign up…you need to submit an application (pasted from his website):
PR Coaching Program is now accepting applications from athletes interested in being coached.
Peter and his coaching staff are looking for an limited number of ITU, 70.3 and IM distance athletes.
*If you’re interested please send a short *Email to P.R.Peak Performance of introduction.
Let us know what distance you want to focus on as well as your level of experience.
All age group, gender and experience welcomed. * * Short listed athletes will be asked to fill out a fairly detailed questionnaire to ensure a good fit with the PR Coaching Program.
Email P.R. Peak Performance
I’m just curiuos to see the price tag.
I emailed them last night after reading posts here - had an email back this morning! They have some other coaches working with Peter Reid - range from $200-$500 per month. Bios for the other coaches will be up on the site soon. - zoe
Am I the only one on ST who wants to be coached by the best coach and not the best athlete? If those two happen to coincide (and sometimes they do), great! If not, I’ll opt for the best coach any day of the week.
That said, if I had the dough, I’d love to have PR as a consultant/adviser.
Let me say first that wI like PR a lot for racing!
But I in a way wonder just why he has no update on his website concerning the result of Kona this year.
In a way I did expect at least something concerning his pre race interview with Triathlete magazine where he said that Normann would not be a factor. After all he was proven quite wrong!
Hmmmmm…
I can tell you that by the time the plane lifted off from Kona, we were torched. It took five days for me to get my act together and do a final report - and I write for a living. I talked a bit about the race but you have to remember we were out at the energy lab all day and didn’t really see much of the race. For Pete to comment on the race wasn’t really realistic. Here on Slowtwitch I posted a few post race thoughts from Pete. He was wrong about Normann and right about Desiree. It was all in fun. Not sure what else you’re looking for.
Clint
i think you need to read is website closer. Peter talk about the great race of norman and how he was completly wrong about it. what else do you want??? Peter’s intereview in triathlete mag was a very powerfull motivation for norman on race day. it was in his head the all day and help him out the same way that it help out peter in 1998 when Dave scott said peter could never win hawaii as he didnt know how to run!
that kind of stuff happen all the time and it s good for the sport!
Jonnyo, are you signing up with Peter ?..you already used his triathlete mag program and went 9:02 at Kona. If you actually go with the full blown program you might go 8:02 and beat LVL’s record!
I think Peter is a GREAT athlete. but after watching “what it takes” i would never want him coaching me.
kurt
Kurt…you’re being soft dude. You need to pony up and go on the Reid program. He’ll take 40 min off your Ironman time :-).
paulo, can take 1 hour off my time.
Really, why?
Do you expect to make a statement like that and not be questioned?
If you make a blanket statement at least back up why you think that.
With your engine, anyone can take 1 hour off your time :-). You just need to pace the bike properly (and do a proper swim split…) ![]()
